Resolved Navigating the internet

When I click on a link in my email or from another internet site it will do nothing. In order to get the link to work, I have to right click, copy short cut, and paste. Some links work great but mostly I have problems getting them to open. I am running Internet Explorer 8 on Windows 7.

I am using Windows Live Mail. It doesn't just happen in email. It also happens from links on Internet sites.

I tried this and doesn't seem any better. In fact the "this page" link you gave me I had to right click, copy shortcut, and paste to get anywhere.

 

The links in these posts will open a new window unless you tell them otherwise.

If you click on a link in a post with the wheel of your mouse or right click it and left click "Open in new tab," does the link work?

 

I installed Internet Explorer 9 and now when I attempt to go to a site I get a blank page. If I right click then click open in new tab, nothing at all happens.

 

Press the Windows key/R key combination to open the Run window. In the Run window, type "cmd" (without the quotes), click OK.

In the window that opens, type "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" (without the quotes), press the Enter key. You should get a message whether it was successful.

Repeat the process for each of the following (type one in, press the Enter key, click OK on the message):
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll‏
regsvr32 msxml.dll‏
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll‏
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll

Re-registering those dll's won't hurt anything and it might help.

 

With the "regsvr32 urlmon.dll" was the only one I could get to ok the install. The rest of the .dll files I got a box with
" The module "msjava.dll" failed to load.
Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path
or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .dll files.
The specified module could not be found. "
This message came up with the last 6 .dll files I tried to install.

 

Sorry for the error. I got the same results when I tried following the instructions I posted.

I tried them after I realized I was posting in the Windows 7 forum. Those instructions were on a page for XP. My apologies.

I'm about out of ideas although if I were physically present in front of your computer, I'd install Firefox to see if links work as they should with it. If so, you'll at least have narrowed it down to an IE problem and not a Windows-wide problem.

 

Thanks Miz and all who attempted to help me. I think I may try Firefox or else just restore my computer to before I installed Windows 7 SP1 and IE9.

 

It is not a virus as I have 2 virus programs plus windows security running and they should stop anything coming my way. I have switched to Google Chrome and it seems to be better. I believe we can say this has been solved. Thanks anyway

 

Hi rogi, I agree with yourself it's likely not a virus but I do hope you only have one of those antivirus software actively scanning at any time (2 or more will cause problems in itself).

Anyway, although not a perfect solution you do appear to have solved the problem...
