Ok AE lets take another shot!

Before we begin a couple of questions!

You say that they slow down during copy!

    All three?
Or just the 2 envloved in the copy?

    If only 2 which 2?

AE you cain't expect much from the 133 with 32 megs, is it the one that answers calls? If so ...geezzz!

FYI: Win2k or XP due to being more advanced and able to multithread can multitask so much better than win98. You would get more useability with these during the copy!

You keep saying "copy and paste" in ref to these files!

DO NOT USE COPY AND PAST ON LARGE FILES!

Ok for links and shortcuts! A copy and paste is a 2 step operation! When you copy this way you first copy the file to a buffer/clipboard then from there to the final location! Do direct copy it is much faster! This will help!

    Now for the network problem!

    Answer me this!

At the remote computer that dials in!
After connection can you network neighborhood to see the DUS?

After seeing the DUS do you see your shares? The folder that has the files!

If you see the shared folder can you open it?

If it opens do you see your file?

    Enough steps now!!

If you can see your file let me know and I will show you the best way to copy the file!

If you can not complete these steps, we need to backup and fix you network configuration!

I don't know how else to do it. You say use direct copy but I don't know any other way than what I am doing. Also, the gateway computer has nothing to do with this.

We haven't see our computers in Network Neighborhood yet but they must be there because we do a find computer and it brings up the shares. We can see each others files and browse through all of the folders.

Why doesn't my web page with links to my files work like the internet does to download the files?

    Ok AE

Clarification of copy and paste! Copy/paste does not actually copy the entire file to a buffer but is an extra step. Puts location info and etc about the file to be pasted!

How to do it without copy paste!

Example: you have two folders that can be seen on the same computer or accross the network, open the folder that contains the file you wish to copy Right mouse drag and drop on the recieving folder (does not have to be open) when prompted chose copy!

From your description it sounds as though you do have network access but browsing is not in effect since you have to "find computer "!

Ok so at the remote call in computer find the file you want to copy from the DUS and rt mouse drag it, to copy to the folder or desktop of the remote computer!

Note: in one of your previous messages you asked why no download dialog like on the www! Well AE I still don't know what you are trying to accomplish besides copying across the network! But if you want it to act like the www then you need to set up the DUS to be a Web Server! That is a whole nother story!

Do it like me. Forget about W98. Install Linux. Works great on my P133, 32MB RAM with Apache web server.

    Look AE

I am trying my best to help you!

You are trying to tell "ME" about the network! If you know so much about networking then you don't need us!

You need to help me help you! Try answering my questions for a change!

It takes much more than a GATEWAY for a network to operate!

I do this professionally (for 24 years) currently maintain over 1000 networked computers! You have 3 and you started when 4 days ago?

Ok! Maybe I've had to much coffee!

    So lets begin again!

Answer the questions of my last detailed message!

    Yes I agree with Tenoren!

Linux has I think the best web server (for minimun resources) if that is what you want or need! But from the info you have given noone can tell!

But for me we will complete the network before I will move to that step, because the network still has to right for everything to work properly!

I am sorry Mike, there has been a misunderstanding. When I said Gateway I did not mean a network gateway I meant my gateway brand computer. Forgive me for not making that clear.

After connection can you network neighborhood to see the DUS?
Not that I have see. We always have to do a search for the computer name.

After seeing the DUS do you see your shares? The folder that has the files!
    yes

If you see the shared folder can you open it?
    yes, all of them.

If it opens do you see your file?
    yes, all of them.

I got the copy part down but I don't want to use that method if I can avoid it. I want to use the directory page that I made. It will contain links to all the files I want people to be able to download.

Ok now I understand some more! I don't understand where the copying comes in yet but first things first!

    Confirm:

On the remote computer that dials in, you can actually get the folder that you want up on the screen?

Ok to save all this "find computer and browsing" do this!

Browse thu once more and find the last folder (that will contain the files etc) do not open the folder but rt mouse drag that folder to the desktop of the remote computer! When you let off the rt button chose "create shortcut "! Close all the find computer windows!

Now open the folder you just created! The files should show!

If so exactly what happens when you click a link inside this folder! Just tell me exactly what happens first! Then tell me what you want/expect! Only this OK!

I am not sure that we are on the same page here. Do you think that my trouble was that I couldn's copy the files? That is not the issue. What I am doing is making a web page containing links to files on my computer so that someone can download them from a remote computer. Here is an example of one of the links:

    file://ANDREW/SETUP%20FILES/Software/Power%20archiver%202002.exe

    Here is another one:

    file://ANDREW/EDITING%20MISC/Add%20(open%20with)%20to%20right%20click%20menu.cab

I opened my web page and right clicked on those links and selected "copy shortcut ".

To answer your question; nothing at all happens when we click on the links from a remote location. But when I am at home the links work perfectly. The download box comes up. That is all I want. But it doesn't seem to work remotely.

Stay on my page a while AE!

I don't think much at all about the copying because you haven't given me enough info on that! Thats what I said "don't know where the copying comes in "!

Forget this for now we will get back to it!

Well you did tell me that when you click the link on the page from the remote that nothing at all happens! Which is all I needed to know!

Next on the remote computer! Rt click and give me properties on one of the links!

Tell me exactly what it says! That is all I want for now!

    NKJV%20Bible.cab

    Protocol: File Protocol

    Type: PowerArchiver CAB File

    Address(URL): file://ANDREW/NKJV%20BIBLE/NKJV%20Bible.cab

For some unknown reason it worked this time when we connected. Does it look like it should have?
