How can I get my SD cards unlocked, (key on the side is unlocked) My digital cameras' when reformatting with them made it so they are write protected. I have tried using regedit and it hasnt work they are still write protect. How come each digital camera can reformat the cards to their specs and go over the write protection but my computer cant? I have 3 different digital cameras sitting in front of me and each one can reformat the 4gig SD card. Again please someone help me....

Does this problem apply to more than just one SD card ?

If just a single card is involved then the locking switch on card may be faulty.

SD/CF cards should not be formatted by a computer, but see below - always format in the camera and if switching cameras it is best to format in the camera in which the card is to be used.

There are a couple ot things you might try ....

If any of your cameras provide the facility for a low level format try that, or .....

Try the SD Formatter from the SD Association which is designed to run on a computer .....

SD Formatter 3.0 for SD/SDHC/SDXC Read the manual before installing the software. NB - I have not used this software so you are on your own on this.

Thanks yes it does it all all my cards, I think its the way I am trying to format within the PC. I am using my Canon MX870 Printer and I noticed in the settings that there is a setting called read/write attribute its set at Not Writable from PC. I do not know how to change this setting I have tried and tried but it will not change. I wanted to format a 4GB card so I can install Win7 onto my ACER MINI since there is no cd drive i have to use a flash card. Thanks for any comments.

PeteC, I have installed that program and I still can not get it to format. I think the problem lays with my printer since I am using that as the card reader. There is a setting on it that says read/write attribute its set at Not Writable from PC. I am not sure how to change it, I have tried and it wont change. Its a Canon MX870 and I have had it for alittle while. It used to work before but for some reason its not working now. It will not work on any of my SD cards. Also I am trying to put Win7 on a 4GB SD card so I can install it onto my Acer Mini. Thanks for any and all help...

I would try to format the card directly on the PC using a card reader directly connected, not via the printer.

If you have a 4 Gb flash drive that may be better - I used one to load Win 7 to my Asus netbook.
