Hi all, hope someone can unriddle that for me.
Running XP Pro Sp3 Windows Media Player 11, I can not work out.
I don't believe I have a hardware problem as I can play Audio on my other media players without any problems Real Player, VLC, Quick Time all work fine.
Windows Media Player runs OK the Bar moves along but no sound.
If I insert a Audio CD I can play that and I have sound. I can Rip that CD to any Format MP3, WAV, windows media file and on playback I have no sound. All audio file extensions are ticked on.
I have uninstalled WMP back to version 9, no sound, installed 10 no sound up to 11 again no sound, installed KLite Codec no diff, installed AC3 no diff, what else can I do. It used to work some time back, but I have no idea exactly when and what happened when it stopped.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

You've probably already done this but if not... (prompts from Win XP)

    * Double-click the sound incon (in the taskbar near the clock) and make sure none of the channels other than the microphone are muted and the volumes are set to the midpoints.

    * In the control panel... Sounds and Audio Devices... Audio tab... Sound Playback section... make sure the correct default device is selected.

Thank you Rick, your reply was appreciated. But yes like you thought, I have tried all those things on numerous occasions.
The silly thing about this all is, since WMP does not give me sound I am playing the same files in Real Player without any problems.
You might ask, so why don't you just use Real Player instead of WMP.
The reason for that is when I rip my CD's to MP3, WMP is Light-years ahead of Real Player in getting media Information and presenting it in your List.
Since I am a bit of a Dinosaur when it comes to Music I like the 70's 80's and 90's and my list in Real Player is three quarters filled with Untitled or Unknown Artist and I don't like that.
Someone one day will know why. :D :D I hope.
    cheers

Just to mention again I can play a CD no problem rip it to MP3 using WMP and it will get all the media information and display such. But when I click on any track that I have just ripped I have no sound, albeit I have sound when I play the CD to be ripped or while ripping.

The Windows Media Player support center may have useful information http://support.microsoft.com/ph/7763#tab0

Microsoft support search has several hits when searching on the issue, maybe some of them will be useful.

    This one was interesting- http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...111-only/5324408a-4a5f-4acc-88a3-65871b11e124

Hi Rick, well thank you, thank you, searching for the various control settings, I stumbled across one setting where my output was set to "ATI Digital out ", instead of "Realtec Digital out ". Changed that setting and Bingo sound all round.
This setting was in WMP Options hidden away, and that was obviously the reason only WMP was affected by it.
So I am a happy chappy again thanks to you.
These are quite valuable links for future references well done.
    Thanks again
