    It is MS Works.
I can not open any docs that have been sent to me.

Try changing the file extension for.doc to .rtf then open it with Works.

If Whiskeyman's suggestion does not work - and it only applies if the doc is saved to the hard drive, I would reinstall Word from your Works CD.

Okay, here is what is listed on the CD I have. I find nothing with MS Word. Although I have Word and have worked in it.
    Files currently on the CD
    Folder marked COMMON
    " " DATA
    " " FONTS
    " " PFILES
    " " PSS
    " " REDIST
    " " SXS
    " " SYSTEM
    " " SYSTEM32
    ICON " AUTORUN
    " " INSTMSIA
    " " README
    " " SETUP
" " SETUP (this one is shaped like a steno notebook)

So where do I go from here?

To clarify - which version of Works do you have? Need to know to check if Word is included rather than Works Word Processor which is a different animal.

Post the answer before following the suggestions below.

You cannot install Word from within the CD - you will need to put the Works CD into the drive and allow it to run. If a repair option is given take that or, if no such option exists go for a full install.

If the computer bitches at that the only option is to uninstall Works and make a clean install.

I have been unable to determine whether or not Word as opposed to Works Word Processor is included in that version, but there are instructions here for repairing/re-installing Works 8.5 .....

How to Reinstall Microsoft Works 8.5
