Resolved Update cancels in Microsoft Update

I recently had to reinstall XP Pro SP-3 32 bit, which meant that That I had to reinstall over a 100 updates to the system. Everything installed without a
problem except for one update. The update was Office 2003 Service Pack 3.
It downloads w/o a problem and starts the install process then stops.
The update history log says "update cancelled ". Other updates to Office 2003
install w/o a problem. Any suggestions as to where to start looking?

 

You are lucky that only one update failed to install. For the past three months every update downloaded, and all or most did not install. However, they installed when I shutdown the machine, except for KB971029, which failed for four straight days, and installed today on Shutdown. Just watch the Shutdown icon. It is modified, somewhat, when there is an update ready to install. I can't be sure if it is the same problem as yours, as my problems are with windows updates.

Yes check on your AV, in one system I have the MS Security Essintials it wanted that up date first did that alone, then the rest after.

Office 2003 Service Pack 3 is a very large update that patches lots of programs. Taking the message at face value, perhaps you did not wait long enough for it to complete? On an older computer it may take a very long time.

This microsoft page gives more information and allows you to download it independent of Windows Update. You might try installing it from here.
