I am trying to follow the instructions on this BBS to create a Slip-stream Windows XP SP-3 disk.

The question is can I use a Windows XP SP-2 Slip-streamed disk as the media to "copy the contents of your Windows XP CD" to my c:\xp folder?

Reason I'm asking is I see that my Slip-streamed SP-2 disk has the file "Microsoft Corporation.img" already included on my disk.

Those SP-2 files are the files I will be using when integrating the extracted SP-3 files in preparation for burning the new disk.

How do I handle the "Microsoft Corporation.img" file... Do I still need to include it when burning the disk?

Should I delete it from the folder after I integrated the extracted SP-3 files?

Also is there any step by step guides for using the program ImgBurn when making a Windows xp sp-3 slipstream disk?

    thanks,
    denny

    Thanks Neil for the reply..

The link you provided still leaves me in question..

All is good news up until step 5.

I found a GUI for CDImage.exe and when reading the step by step instructions it directs you to include the microsoft img file. (as does the link you provided vie the command input method)

    http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/15/

This leads me back to my original problem..

What to do about the "microsoft img" file that was already included in my xp-sp-2 disk?

If I'm using my slip-streamed xp-sp-2 disk as the starting media and it has already the "microsoft img" file on it.

With those files I than integrate the xp-sp-3 release file from Microsoft.

If I use those combined files and follow instructions to create a iso file.. I would be adding a second img file to the burn media.. when creating a iso file...

In my book something doesn't jive... maybe I'm over thinking the issue...

I am not aware of any problems with Slipstreaming SP3 using an SP2 CD. Maybe Arie might be able to help out here. Neil.

Obviously were all not on the same page... I'll try to be more specific with this request for information..

Do I need to use the IsoBuster program to retrieve the file "Microsoft Corporation.img "?

That file "Microsoft Corporation.img" is already present on my slip-streamed xp-sp-2 disk.

I copied that file "Microsoft Corporation.img" and all the others files & folder on my slip-streamed xp-sp-2 disk to the "work folder" C:\ XP-CD.

I then extracted the downloaded sp-3 files from MS and integrated them to the same C:\XP-CD folder..

The next step using IsoBuster seems to be a redundant operation (at least in my thinking).. therefor my original post...

    thanks,
    denny

You'll need "Microsoft Corporation.img" to create the boot record on the CD you are going to create. Else you'll end up with a slipstreamed XP installation CD that doesn't boot up. If you already have the file available to you, you do not need to use IsoBuster again.
Apparently the SP2 CD was slipstreamed before and the file just got copied along with the process while being present in the root folder.

    Thanks markp62 for your response..

I'll try to create the slipstream sp-3 disk tomorrow. Now I wonder... Do I move the "img file" to a temp folder and use the "boot disk tab" in nero and point it to the "img file" and let nero do it's thing? Or just skip that step? Is there more to making a bootable disk then just having the "img file" in the root directory?

    thanks,
    denny

Success at last.. The trick is to remove the "Microsoft Corporation img file" from the "work folder" C:\ XP-CD to a separate folder or in my case the "floppy A drive" as that was only spot my burning software (ImgBurn) would allow me to access it.

( The "Microsoft Corporation img file "was one of the files copied from my old slipstreamed xp-cd-sp-2 disk file and I didn't need to extract it with ISObuster).

After that choose the "make boot disk option" with the burning software.. and use the file as required..

Things that didn't work are below..

I tried to just leave the "Microsoft Corporation img" file in the xp-cd folder and than burn all the required files to a CD but it would not boot..

I also burned thru extra disks thinking I got something else wrong because the computer I was using as a test bed kept giving me the BSOD when it did boot to the newly burned xp-sp-3 CD.

With the test computer I was able to use a correctly burned SP-3 disk & boot to it.. It booted and loaded everything, but when starting the final stage it crashed with the stop error of 0x0000007B (0xF79AC524, 0xC00000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).....

The test computer had XP- Pro with SP-3 installed & all updates, virus free, & no hardware issues and was working without any errors.

I was also able to boot and load correctly my old xp-sp-2 slipstreamed disk to the test computer so I assumed it would be ok to use...

After it crashed several times I tried my newly burned xp-sp-3 disk on my newer home built with 2 gig of memory.. The xp-sp-3 slipstreamed disk booted and worked as expected...

The test computer only had 128 mb of memory... So I'm guessing that was the problem...

Much thanks to Neil, Arie, & Markp62 for your assistance..
