    It's called "Information bar ".
Open IE, go Tools>Internet options>Advanced tab and click on "Reset" button.
Restart IE and see, if it works now.

Go ahead and try "sfc ".

    Uninstall IE8. It'll revert itself to IE7.
    See, if you can update.
If everything goes fine, update back to IE8.

There's no "Remove Button" for IE8 entry listed in the "Add or Remove programs ".

There are "Remove Buttons" for all the IE 8 updates installed since yesterday but not for the main IE 8 program.

I also tied to go to "Add Remove Windows Components" but got a error message saying "System stand-alone Optional component manger has encounter a problem and needs to close ".

Tried that in reverse but no joy.. so I just choose to defaulted to medium security instead of the default medium-high.. that worked now I can get Windows updates. Thanks for the lead...

I still think that the computer has system files that are missing or corrupt.. What about my problem trying to run sfc.exe/scannow?

    Good news :)
Install all updates first. Then, try "sfc" again.

    All updates are done..

I noticed that by doing a search on the proper way to run sfc.exe it mentioned that the folder i386 needed to be on the computer.. It was not so I copied it from the slipstream xp sp3 disk.. When I ran sfc.exe /scannow the computer crashed again with the same error message as before.

    Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)
    No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Make sure, your settings are correct....

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel (Start>Control Panel in Vista).
    2. Double-click System.
    3. Click (Advanced system settings link in Vista, then --->)the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
    4. Make sure, there is a checkmark in Write an event to the system log.
    5. In the Write debugging information list, click Small memory dump (64k) (128K in Windows 7).
