I have reinstalled Windows XP on to my old PC. (I did not format the hard drive before doing so, just reinstalled windows over the existing version).

The PC will now not register that it has an adsl (you cal it DSLin the States I think) cable plugged into it to it and that it should have an INTERNET connection and is still part of a the existing home network as previously.

Can someone please help me to get on line ? I have another PC connected to the INTERNET so I can download any files etc and transfer them via the USB drive if necessary.
    Thank you in advance.

It kept telling me that the copy of windows was not validated( or had to be registered or similiar. I can't remember exactly what it said.) After I validated it it kept repeating the same message on and off and would not start.I reinstalled XP and revalidated it.It starts ok now but as I said I have no way of connecting it to the internet right now.

Right click > My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager > expand Network Adapters - Do you have anything shown??

If not, you may have to install Drivers. Try an uninstall of Network Adapter and close out and Restart. Then recheck to see if Windows installs Network Adapter on the Restart.

Check your Network Connections again to see if there has been a change. Neil.

there showing an "unknown device" witha yellow! next to it.

How do I uninstall Network adapter? Right clicking does not give me an option to uninstal.

Checking further it looks like I need to instala driver, but without an internet connection the wizard can not do so!!!!!!

Modify your System details in your profile here to include the brand/model of your computer. If manufactured by Dell, HP, Compaq, etc., we can point you to the needed drivers.

Hunt down the cds that came with your computer. They would contain the necessary drivers.

Many computers are sold without the CD's needed for restoration.

You may also go to the mfg website and see if you can download the drivers from there.

Another option is to do a search on the 'Net for your computer model...and sometimes you can get drivers like that.

Last but not least...since you are on DSL...and probably have a modem...you will have to use the CD that came with it in order to re-establish your network connection.

Been through this a few times :eek:

Hi jerry, I see you are getting a lot of help after my last Post.
What I meant was to Uninstall "the Brand name adapter" eg. 3Com Ethernet/Intel blah blah.

On Restart - Windows should reinstall.

As has been suggested by others - you may have to have your original CD's at hand to provide Drivers or visit the Makers Web site to Download the latest Drivers. Cheers Neil.;)

Jerry - not every driver will be included with Win XP so retired learner's suggestion may or may not work. Plus the fact that sometimes NIC controllers are embedded in the chipset. In which case you would have to install your MB drivers. Your best bet is to visit the website of your PC manufacturer and download the appropriate driver.

Secondly, I would advise you to investigate that problem with the Windows activation you mentioned in your post above. If you are indeed running a legitimate copy of Windows, that message could be caused by a spyware/virus problem. I've seen that happen before so I would do a thorough scan of your PC with an antivirus. Re-installing Windows XP like you did is most definitely not going to fix any malware problems.
