Hello, I have just purchased a JVC HD Video Camera and I am trying to import the video to my Windows XP computer using the autoplay function which does not appear when I connect the camera using a USB port. It has no problem appearing on my windows 7 laptop, and I can import quite easily on it, but not my desktop (XP) I dont want to use the software that came with the camera for this purpose which automatically starts when I connect the camera to the computer. Can you help?

    Thanks

    Dana

Thanks. Ran the wizard, it found problems but now the camera and scanner wizard appears which only permits photos - no video. Another suggestion? On my laptop (windows 7) it automatically found a driver update. My desktop did not. Is this the issue do you think?

    Thanks

From what I can see on the web XP did not come with built in video capture software apart from maybe Movie Maker - don't recall if that was standard issue or a download from MS.

Using the software which came with the camera may be your only way.
    For what?

I may have worded it wrong - it "found new hardware ". Which it seems permitted the autoplay window to open allowing me to choose import video, import photos, open to veiw files etc. I guess xp doesn't offer that?

I've no idea on what medium your camera captures video, but when you connect it to the XP computer is it seen as a drive? If so can you copy the video files off ?

Does the Autoplay window give you the option to View Files? If it does you can copy them directly to the hard drive?

I do not have a video camera so it is not possible to check my old XP box to see the response when a video camera is connected.

No, my xp computer only permits me to view files. I never tries but yes I can copy the files to my computer. It doesnt permit anything else though. I guess i'll have to stick with the software that came with the camera. It isnt too bad, just cumbersome. Thanks for your help!!!!

I double checked the Autoplay options in XP using TweakUI - there is no option to copy video so I'm afraind that you are stuck with the camera software.

    FYI.
HD video cameras usually create files in the MTS variant formats. Windows 7 has native support for this file format in Media Player but XP does not. Installing the software on XP should also install the needed codecs. If then uninstall the software the codecs may remain, and you then may be able to still play the videos using Media Player, and you may still have the Media Player function "automatically add to library ".
