Step #1 - do a complete virus scan. There are a few out there that will disable your firewall and AV programs before they do much of anything else.

If you think one may have gotten in between updates and stuffed your resident AV program, use a net based check to be sure:

    HOUSECALL http://housecall.antivirus.com/ (free scan)

    SYMANTEC http://security2.norton.com/ssc/home.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=QRPSFCSGFZVDTPSOERZ (free scan)

GRISOFT http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm (free AV software and updates)

    TROJANS:

    TAUSCAN http://www.agnitum.com/download/ (free trial)

    PANDA http://www.pandasoftware.com/ (free scan)

VIRUS REMOVAL TOOLS: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html (free downloads for specific needs)

At what point did the messages appear and what did they say?

If you don't find a virus as a cause it is time to get rid of it!

Since you can not control it or uninstall it normally do the following!

    1 safe mode

2 try control panel add/remove may work in safe mode

3 if # 2 still no work look in start-programs-zonealarm for an
uninstall try that, even if 2 or 3 do or do not work continue the
    following!

4 Use mycomputer browse and del the Zonealarm folder

5 search hd for zonealarm delete all leftovers from program

6 search registry an del all refs to zonealarm

7 Regleaner if you have it!

8 and most important stick with the last good ver (2.6) of
    zonealarm (I think anyway)! Smile!

Just an addition to Mike's post. You would also want to delete the c:\windows\internet logs folder. If you do this, you'll lose all your settings for which apps are allowed internet access and which ones aren't but that's really no big deal. Just a matter of giving them permission again if you reinstall the program. Also, in addition to Mike's registry suggestion I would also search it for any occurrances of Zone Labs and ZoneLabs.
