Had Msconfig with Win98SE; want to stop some files from popping up on start up.

Or if program start/not start is all you want to do, Startup Cop works great and is maybe a little simpler to use. Resembles the msconfig from 9X rather than the one from XP.

I could be totally wrong, but why bother going through all the trouble of installing more software? If you want to see what loads up at the startup why not just use the "services" console in Administrative Tools. This will show you what starts up upon boot, and will allow you to turn it on or off at startup.

Not totally wrong Tap-Out but not particularly right either.

Original poster wants to deal with apps and only in rare cases will an app be running as a service.
