Perhaps it's something as simple as opening the case and re-seating the the card. Might be just a bad connection. I guess if I was going to try something, that's where I'd start.

Sounds like your M/B may be at fault. (sorry about the pun)
You may have a bad circuit connection which is affected by heat.
Did you manage to get into BIOS? My comp gives DEL as entry to BIOS.
I don't know what Dell tell you to do - it usually depends on the Brand of BIOS. Cheers Neil.

    Further to my Post #27:
Dell Dimension E510 (Pentium 4 630 3GHz, 512MB RAM, 80GB HDD, XP Media Center 2005) (discontinued) Is this your machine?
If so, I found this in Techguys Forum:

All Dell machines that used BTX form factor motherboards had a high motherboard failure rate. Whenever I get a Dell machine in with a BTX form factor motherboard, the motherboard is the first item I suspect as being the problem.

Some Dell machines with BTX form factor boards also had a problem with these boards when using some ATI video cards. If your machine has an ATI video card I would try another video card or the onboard video to see if that solves the problem. If the problem is not the video card then my guess is that there is a 95% probability that the motherboard is defective.
Also, the specs said Audio was Sagatel built in. Neil.

Have you tried pluging you speakers into the MOBO instead of the sound card? It should be up near where your USB and Keyboard and mouse plugs in.

mrbill the sound card is sound blaster audigy 2 zs. i found the disk. but dont think cd/dvd burner works, last time i tried it,it made a rumbling noise,i dont know why.
i connected speakers back to the sound card. got no sound at all on the intergrated either with speakers or headset.
did the uninstall of the creative audigy audio processor(wdm) and restarted.still no sound yet.

If your cd drive doesn't work and you want to try reinstalling drivers for the card, you can get them here.

You only need to download one of them. The top two are both drivers but different versions of the driver. The newest one is the first one in the list. That's the one I'd try if I was doing this. You're choice though. The file dates are listed there.

The bottom two downloads are applications that more than likely were on your install cd. You can download them if you want but they aren't necessary. They won't have any effect on the problem you're having. They are just extras. Some would call them goodies, others would call them bloat. :)

OK. One more thought did come to me though. You say your sound works after rebooting but not after shutting down? It's not likely but since you have onboard sound and a sound card, perhaps the bios is getting things wrong after a shutdown which might point to a bad battery on the motherboard. Might not hurt to try putting a new one in it.

Like I said, it's not likely but those batteries are cheap and easy to replace. You don't have much to lose by trying it. ;)
