I lost my hard disk due to mechanical failure. I had it replaced. I restored the base software using my Toshiba Recovery disk. It works fine & the Satellite P25-507 boots up to Windows XP Home edition. I do the following:
    1) Install my backup software, BackUp MyPC v6
    [vendor no longer in business]
    2) Setup networking to join my network group on my home LAN
    3) Install Iomega software to make my network disk visible as drive N:
    4) Restore my full backup including system state
    5) Upon Reboot after restore, receive message "load needed DLL's for kernel ".

I have a windows XP Home Edition installation disk & have tried the following:
    - Repair of Windows installation [causes reboot loop]
    - Tried fixing reboot loop by replacing kernel32.dll
    - Tried Recovery Console
    - Fixed MBR
    - Fixed Boot Sector
    - Rebuilt boot configuration
    - Replaced NTLDR
    - Ran chkdsk /r

Everything I tried has no effect, except the repair of the Windows installation that caused the reboot loop. I start from scratch with every series of steps I try.

I would really like to get my applications & data files back.

When the hard drive had a mechanical failure, I had a 6-day old diff backup and the full backup that preceded it. I was running Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

I don't believe I know how to do a fresh installation & get all the drivers right. I would prefer not to have to manually reinstall all of the applications & figure out how to get the data for them. I do not know enough to tinker with the BIOS. I would probably cause additional problems.

Anyone know how to get my system + applications back?

    :(

Thank you for the response. That seems to be something that should have been obvious to me, but for some reason wasn't.

I'll try that and post the results.

    No Joy in Mudville

I used the Toshiba recovery disk to install the factory image that runs on Windows XP SP1. It, as always, worked fine.

I followed all the cryptic MS links and after about a million reboots, upgraded to SP2 and all the updates until SP3, but not including SP3. It worked finde & showed to be running SP2. It should be at the update level that my laptop had before I lost the disk.

I went through the steps to apply the restore of the base full backup I have.

Same result. The dreaded "load needed DLLs for kernel. "

What now? Anyone have a solution to this that I haven't tried?

    Thanks for your help.

    Next chapter:

I acquired an installation CD with Windows XP Home Edition SP2. The one I was using had Windows XP Home Edition SP1.

I tried doing a Windows repair using the new disk. It did not display the same messages & seemed to have gotten further. Eventually it displayed the following message:
    ===============================================================
winlogon.exe - Entry Point Not Found

The procedure entry point ColorHLSToRGB could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.dll.
    ===============================================================
The capitalization above is not a typo. I think I reproduced the message as it appears in the reboot.

The message appears on a black screen in a dialog box with an OK button. If I click the OK button, it re-displays the same message.

    Any ideas?

Ok it appears you still have some corrupted DLL's :(

Earlier you stated you done a full system restore including system state. Can you restore only the data from the backup and leave the system alone?

The error that repeats is not exactly the same.

    The executable reporting it changes:
    services.exe
    lsass.exe

    Then, reboot and repeat...

Can I repair the dlls? I have not tried just the data. I would assume I can, but that would leave me without the things needed for the applications, right? Some of whatever that is would be the registry entries & I'm not sure what else, but there's likely more.

If I did that, then where would I go from there?

The restore I'm attempting is the first of two I need to restore. I have a full backup and then a diff backup to apply after restoring the full backup.

When I do the restore, there are some settings to chose for the restore. I am selecting the "replace only if file is older ". I believe the two other settings are "replace always" and "replace never ", or something equivalent.

I tried repairing the dlls that were mentioned, then it looked like it began a fresh XP installation. Dialogs popped up requesting drivers for my graphics card, the XP installation progress screen was up, then it complained about several dlls & I scrapped it to start over. Not quite sure where to go from here...

Try replace always, that way you should have the same setup which was present when you made the backup.

Earlier you mentioned the recover console did you try SFC /SCANNOW whilst there?

I did not try SFC /SCANNOW. What does that do?

I looked it up on the web. Looks like it scans the system files & I assume it attempts to repair any found to be bad. I'll try that after I get the system built up to the level for restore & try the restore... Unless you have other steps in mind...

Try the restore with replace all first, with any luck you won't need SFC

I did the restore & selected always replace. Same result.

In the Recovery console for Windows XP Home Edition SP2, it does not recognize SFC. The list of commands displayed after entering help does not include SFC. Maybe this command is available in some other OS environment.

Sounds good, though. Wish it were available. It sounds like what I need.

Not sure where to go from here...

I tried doing a windows repair since I previously had not brought the base system up to SP2 & did not have a Windows XP Home Edition SP2 installation disk to use.

Upon reboot, there was an error dialog for ODBC32.dll & then it went into what looks like a fresh install screen. This is not what I had expected. It did this before & then started asking for drivers for my video card. Obviously, the restored system was not retained.

It did that this time, too. So, here's what I think I will do...

    1) Use the Toshiba Recovery disk to get the factory disk back with Windows Home Edition XP SP1
    2) Configure networking & join my group on my LAN
    3) Update the Windows XP Home Edition to SP2 with all updates up to but not including SP3
    4) Restore the Full backup, without the system state. This should get all the files & hopefully, it will reboot OK.
    5) Restore the Diff backup with system state. & go from there.

This should take quite awhile. Getting to the first restore takes about 6 hours of work. The full restore takes about 12 hours. The diff restore will take quite awhile, etc. etc.

I'll probably not be able to do it straight through... I have other things I need to do...

If anyone has any better idea, let me know...

Bottom line: I have been able to restore & get it to reboot!

    What I did:

    1) Restored basic system with Toshiba Recovery Disk
    2) Applied SP2 and all updates up to, but not including SP3
    3) Restored Full backup, always replace, no system state
    4) Restored Diff backup, always replace, system state

Right now, I've begun cleaning up the software. This could take some time. The system seems healthy & it looks like it's going to be OK. I'll know more after I've worked with it awhile...

    Thanks for the help!
