Can't open certain attachments in WLM

I can't open certain types of attachment in WLM 2011 running W7.
I can open pdfs and jpegs, but when I try to open a .doc, xls, pps or eml, Idon't get any error messages and nothing happens. My WLM freezes and I have to hit esc.
If I copy the attachment to my desktop I can open them, no problem.
I don't think it a file association issue and I have reloaded WLM.

Be sure and note Goddez cautions on backing up registry/restore point before proceeding.

 

Hi, I haven't done a clean reinstall yet.
The fix above does not really apply, I have checked.
