    The operating system is Vista.

I previously had Office2000 loaded on the pc and used Word 2000.

I upgraded to Office 2003 recently and removed Office200 through the add/remove area.

New word docs open ok. However the older docs will not open in word2003automatically.

I have tried to get a file association through the "open with" command but I can only find word pad.

The browse area is giving me huge problems in finding the correct file which I can then associate with these word docs. Any suggestions please?

Hi jerry zarb. Right click the word document in question and select open with< choose program< browse button, navigate to C:/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office11. Scroll down and locate the file WinWord.exe. It will have an icon of a W. Highlight it and click the open button.

Now click the checkbox that says Always use the selected program to open this kind of file. Once thats done click ok to close the Open With window.

    Still not working.

Thank you Evan, However after following all of your instructions, the system still does not show Winword inthe available programmes list. It does show "Wordicon" which is not really the exe file and will not open the document:mad:

When you click the browse button and navigate to the Microsoft Office directory in the open with window under where it says file name, click the down arrow where it says files of type and click all files. Now the winword.exe file should show up.

    still no luck

Remeber this is vista and the "open with" window is slightly different. However I have navigated to the file name "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE" which should be the correct file.
When I click "Open" nothing happens, and under erecommended programmes it shows Word Pad and under the Other Programs it still shows the "wordicon" icon ..
I remeber thta microsoft once had adownload to allow opening of older word docs with newer versions of Word. If I can find it maybe it can help.Do you have any idea where I can look for it?

    Thank You very much....

....I have fixed the problem in a round about way.

I still had the setup discs for Office 2000 so I reinstalled word2000 (only, as I did not want the other programmes such as outlook etc which are already installed in word2003).
I was then able to set up an association with the older word 20o0 type documents to open with winword. They opend with word2003
Then I removed office 200o completely again leaving Office2003 installed.
All .doc files now open with Word2003:D
Thank you for your assistance in this matter
