Occasionally, my desktop icons change position after I restart the computer. I have Windows 7 Home Premium. I was told by HP Support that Microsoft has no options to lock desktop icons. They said to right-click desktop and click View, then check Auto-Arrange icons and check Align icone to grid. In case this does not work, does anyone have a better idea? Thanks.

Did you try refreshing the desktop. Right any open area on the desktop and you will see it listed in the context menu.

    Good idea, but temporary.

Thanks Ij50. It works to put all the icons back in their orignal place, but you have to do this each time you restart computer. A good temporary fix though.

I'm still looking around for a fix. My user name begins with a lowercase L(ell).

Try holding the shift key down on start up. You will have to do this every time you add a new Icon to the desktop. I know its another temp fix but i'm trying to find a registry fix that i have laying around.

Try putting the icons where you want them. Logoff then logon. If they stay put then do a restart. Did you try Right clicking on the desktop\sort by and choose on of those options.

I tried a combination of everything. Nothing works. I reached the conclusion that it's not worth going crazy over. As long as I can still find the icons, I'll can live with it, but thanks for trying lj50.

H_KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies. Once in Policies create a key and name it Explorer. Right click Explorer click on DWORD Value and name the key NoSaveSettings and set it to 0. Click Ok. It should look like this NoSaveSettings 0x00000000(0)
