Starting in November my system (Dell 745 Optiplex Dual Core 2.8 Ghz 2mb RAM - Windows XPSP3 fully updated) started making scratching / whining / clicking noises. It gradually got worse to the point that I started to do some looking for information.

I had scanned with several different products including SpyBot, Malwarebytes, Live Onecare and several others, which found nothing.

Disk Cleanup gave me nothing, but a Defrag check said my 80 Gb hard drive was 27% fragmented. After the defrag the noises were gone for about 3 hrs...then started up again.

More scans with other products gave me nothing to work with.

I used Process Explorer and saw that the noises were happening in relationship to Deferred Procedure Calls. I asked about them on the Microsoft TechNet Forums and basically got no answer.

I've even recently reinstalled the OS using an ImageBurn made CD that was created by the guy who sold me the computer back in June of last year and got all the updates needed through Microsoft Update. At this point I don't have the Microsoft .Net 3.5, Sun Java or any Adobe installed.

But I'm still having the noises...and there's moments when I open up my Favorites in IE8 that the pointer with seem to "lock" on one of them and a scratching noise comes from the hard drive (desktop).

My brother seems to think my hard drive is going...but since this has been happening over 3 months now...I'm more inclined that it has to do with software.

    Any ideas?

Thanks for your time in advance.

    Regards

    David

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

I am inclined to agree with your brother :) Software does not induce ....
unless they emanate from the speakers.
Check out your hard drive with the manufacturer's disk diagnostic software - DOS version from a bootable CD .....

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

Hard Drive would be my first guess. Do like mentioned above and run the disk diagnostic.

For some reason I can't burn the iso from Western Digital to a CD.

My CD drive isn't recognizing ANY blank CD's :-o

    Thoughts?

@ PeteC...if it isn't software induced...then why can I move my mouse pointer around on various websites (this one is a good example)...and not hear the noises?

Look in the Device Manager and see if it shows a Yellow ? or ! in there. Especially by your CD or DVD drive. If so, usually right clicking on it and updating it by letting it go on line will solve the problem. That or uninstall it and reboot and let Windows find it and reinstall it.

I believe the reason you aren't getting the noises when moving around the webpage is for the reason the hard drive is not being accessed, when you go to the Favorites you are accessing the hard drive.
If you want to confirm this, turn off or unplug the speakers. Then open the case of the computer, and then you will hear the failing drive get louder.
I believe your next question is why it got quieter after the defrag, the reason would be the heads didn't have to jump around so much.
I would not recommend defragging again as a cure. I do recommend using a flash drive and getting any files you want to save off the drive now.

    I appreciate the thoughts guys.

I got the CD burned...had to turn on the IMAPI-CD Burning in Services.

I just tried to boot to the CD (F12) though and got a message that the drive isn't available. I checked in my BIOS and the CD drive is at the top of the list.

    Now what?

You did burn an image, not the ISO directly to the CD?

Nope  but I learned in the process ;)

Tried to run it after the fix...and got an error that said the licensing text file couldn't be be found. I pulled the CD...rebooted to normal and checked the CD...and the text file is definitely on there.

So at this point I've email Western and posed the question / problem to them.

I'll get back with you when I've got some resolution from them.

And thanks again for your help and patience

STILL trying to figure out why SOME webpages and mouse movement make my hard-drive make all kinds of noises...and others don't.

ALSO don't understand why ANYONE won't address Deferred Procedure Calls and the associated .dll's....no matter WHAT website I get on.

While I was on here...and during this post...no noises.

IF I'm on my gmail...or ANY Yahoo pages...or hotmail...MUCH noise.

    Too stupid for words IMHO

Western Digital's support said that some computers wouldn't run the iso-CD...so they suggested the floppy version or the Wnidows version.

My computer won't run the floppy version for some reason (and yes...I had the Boot Sequence set to floppy 1st).

Windows version said my hard drive had NO problems.

    OK experts...thoughts?

I STILL believe that my problems have to do with Microsoft...my ISP...and SO MANY websites TRYING to collect usage / PERSONAL data.

JMHO...and trust me....do NOT try to tell me that software doing that collecting isn't causing folks problems.
