    Hi,

My system keeps rebooting for no apparent reason. No blue screen of death, no warning messages on re-start, just switches off and reboots.
    Event viewer shows
application errors for MatSvc and Google update
system errors for DCOM (possibly because I have itunes disabled)
no security, system or Antivirus errors
full system scan with avast, including boot files, shows no problems.
CPU running at 46C, hard drives at 40C
thanks for your help in the past,

    Dave

Follow these instructions to post a Dump Data Log.

If you do not have a dump, ensure that your machine is configured to write out a dump by following the directions from microsoft

    Hello Arie,

I have dump files up to 30th November, but none since. System properties are set up for a full memory dump.
have tried to follow the instructions in the link at the top of your post, but cannot find any file on the Microsoft link for winsdk_web.exe, and the link to debugwiz.zip downloads an empty zip archive.
I have downloaded and run DebugDiag.msi, but the system hasn't fallen over since 18.24(GMT+1)
    any ideas?
    thanks,
    Dave

    As it says:
    1. Click here to download the current debugging tools

That will give you the winsdk_web.exe file.

If you get an empty zip archive, you've got more problems. Are you sure you are Malware free?

Thanks, I'll give that a run over the weekend..
I'm never totally certain that I'm malware free, all I know is that Avast and Adaware can't find anything (I ran Avast on boot up before windows)

    thanks again,

    Dave

    Hello again,

managed to download and install winsdk_web.exe, but still can't download debugwiz.zip - the error message tells me that the zip file is corrupt. system fell over again at 18:47, this time it generated a log report, which microsoft told me the problem was with Roxio.
Have managed to download debug diag.msi which has looked at the user.dmp and memory.dmp files, in particular the post-mortem dump files, which gave the following:

Not much, although it looks like a problem with your TomTom software.

    Hi Arie,
I noticed the problem with TomTom, first time I've used this programme since Christmas, so didn't cause any of the previous crashes. I've also cancelled overwrite of existing dump files
I've cancelled auto-restart so I'll know if the system goes down when I'm not sat in front of it, should bebugwix.zip open with Winzip9, if so any ideas why I ca't download it?

Yes it should. Maybe your anti-virus is interfering?

    Hi Arie,

Turned off my anti-virus and firewall, still no success with debugwiz.zip.
    I get the error message
"start of central directory not found; Zip file corrupt. Possible cause: file transfer error "
    Update on problem..
if I turn off autorestart system just hangs, black monitotr screen, no response to keyboard or mouse, but power still on, fans running, all leds lit etc. Only way to get a restart is to hard boot by turning power supply off & on again.
No dump files being generated, tried to force one by turning off half way through bootup sequence, nada.
Event viewer has a number of application errors, several for MatSvc, which seems to be related to Microsft Fixit Centre..

any ideas?, starting to drive me bonkers

    thanks

    Dave
ps also checked smart data for disc drives - no problems reported

Use another PC to download the file. The file is fine, just downloaded it again myself...

It might be a heat problem, where the BIOS is shutting the system down, not Windows. Check for any dust build-up inside the case. Start up with the case open and check that all the fans are spinning freely, including the fan in the power supply (feel the flow with your hand).

I wonder if it might be a power problem. You can borrow a power supply from another computer for testing, but it needs to be a higher Wattage and there might be some extra connectors to consider.

You should be able to check for any dust build-up yourself, if you are not sure about my other suggestions you might need to take it to a repairer.

    Hi Matt,
Thanks for the post. First thing I looked at was the CPU temp, running at about 45C, and bios is set to vary the fan speed on temp, so speeds up when the cpu goes over 50.
Suspected the power supply also, but nothing else shuts down, the screen just goes black as if the screensaver is about to cut in, but the entire system is still live & powered. Can't download Arie's zip file, but I have no dump files to check, system never creates one, despite being set to write a log file on system failure.
The only thing I get are lots of errors in the event log, primarily MatSvc and Google update in the application log, and DCOM & Service Control Manager in the system log.

    thanks

    Dave

No Blue Screen = No System Failure = no dump :)
Remove it from the Start Up - there is no need to have it running, but I'm inclined to agree with Matt it's either overheating or a PSU issue or mobo.

Obviously, uninstall any Google programs you have. They are free so you can reinstall them any time you want (although I actively avoid their "toolbar" and certainly their "updater" if it appeared in any error logs (and probably even if it didn't appear in the logs :D). I uninstall anything that is not really necessary. You need to start getting ruthless or think about reformatting. Reformatting is not going help though, if it is a power problem.

45*C is not too bad, but it might not be good either. When did you check? After the system "stops" try restarting and checking the temperature in the BIOS. Can you hear the fan speeding up at times when the system is under load? Is there a shutdown temperature setting in the BIOS?

Can you borrow another power supply to try?

Did you make any recent changes to your system (install a new program or a piece of hardware, update a driver, install an update, etc)? If so, reverse the changes and see if that fixes it.

How much free space has the partition/drive holding \Windows?

Are you up to date on your BIOS and drivers?

Run hardware diagnostic tests. Start with Memory and Hard disk tests.

    Hello all,

sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away from the computer a lot the last week or so.
    Update:
Drive with the Windows software has 70 gig of free space, second drive has about 80 gig free (has a disk image on it)
Disc health check for C drive is 100%, E drive 98%
Bios and drivers are all up to date, all relevant windows updates are current, bios controls the fan speed, currently 35C on cpu, fan speeds up with increased load (tried rendering a video file to test it)
Still no dump files as system seems to hang with a blank, black screen for a few miniutes then reboots. All Google bits etc removed, but Restore will not work, neither will rolling back to last known good configuration.
The event viewer system log shows the following error every time this happens:
"The sbapifs service failed to start due to the following error: The parameter is incorrect "
Do I need to transfer this thread to malware ?
I've had psu and motherboard problems in the past, but the symptoms were different in that everything shut down, and that is not the case now.
Will run the memory diag now I have a bit more time, but starting to suspect it's a software problem

    thanks,

    Dave

sbapifs is a file/driver from Sunbelt Software and apparently AdAware, so uninstall those programs if you have them. Test, then try reinstalling if you want, but preferably with an updated version.

Sunbelt and AdAware are antimalware, check that you don't have more than one of the same type of antimalware running at the same time, so for example, don't have AdAware and Windows Defender running together. You can have more than one installed, but disable them from loading at start up and run a scan manually when you think you need to.

    Hello all,

Don't know where the Sunbelt software came from. but I do run AdAware on demand.
As neither system restore or last known good configuration wouldn't work, I bit the bullet and reverted to a cloned backup from about 6 months ago.
Much updating and data copying later, I now seem to have a system that works - at least it hasn't fallen over now for 24 hours continous running, so hopefully I can mark this thread as resolved, but will probably never know what the problem was...will clone a new backup if it's still OK tomorrow.
Thanks for all your time and effort,
    Dave
