    Dell Inspiron 1501.

Upon start up a black screen appears saying that the battery is not recognized, to continue press any key. When I press any key PC will start up normally, however PC only runs on AC power and battery is not being charged? Prior to having this problem our power cord died and the battery totally died (no power). After installing the new power cord is when this problem started. PC now only runs on AC with no battery being charged?

Have you tried connecting the power supply for an extended period of time (without turning the laptop on). It could just be the battery needs a few minutes (I'd give it 5-10) to get an initial charge.

Additionally is your replacement PSU DELL approved or is it one of those compatible ones?

PSU is a compatabile one. PSU has been in use several weeks, PC is shutdown daily. Battery should have full charge by now. Have removed battery and reinstalled several times thinking it might be a connection thing.

    Bob63,

Personally experienced this or very similar when I used or replaced a power adapter with wrong model for laptop. It would not recognize adapter and only ran on lower power settings and reduced functions. Didn't charge battery either. Had to look up computer specs and go get recommended adapter. Problem solved.

Following from Ann's advice, it's a tough call. When your original PSU died it could also have damaged either the battery or some charging circuitry in the Laptop.

It may be a case of asking a local repair store to take a look.

    Ann,

I purchased the PSU online, and it was supposed to be a direct replacement for the origional. Wattage and Amps are the same. Might just take it to a local repairman.

    Thanks, Bob
