Is it possible to share single files instead of folders?

One way to do that is to use KazAa, which will allow you to share any single file with the entire Internet. (It's freeware) It requires you to install their software. Do be advised, don't go for anything greater than KazAa lite. The full version is full of spyware!

I use Kaza lite and have found it to be very useful. In essence, it allows you to hook up to other users on a "peer to peer" basis and exchange files. (all or any files you have on your drive, you can choose)

Check it out, type kazaa lite in a Google search and away you go.

Zephyr is right on if p2p sharing is what you want!

But if to share a single file on a network (as in a network share)!
    No! No way with win98!

There are some utilities for passwords etc but no way in the OS!

But if it is only a single file then put it in a folder and share the folder!

NT w2k and xp with ntfs file systems don't even really have indivual file sharing. But by use of the security and permissions the effect can be achievied! But not win98!

How are things in Horse Creek Zep?

    Hi Mike,

Horse Creek is doing well but we expect some late autumn flooding as a result of the Skillet Fork input. That's always a little iffy though so we just keep on keppin' on until it hits.

Take care and keep an even strain on things!

btw, Pay no mind to any criticism you get from some of the folks on this board. They didn't have the correct raisins and you musn't take it to heart. I monitored the thread in question and you did well by presenting all the options. The rest is all B.S.

I think it's a matter of class to ignore personal comments and supply good firm superior information that helps the person with a problem and refrain from criticizing those who may not agree with you. Cheap shots are not well received and any shots at all of a personal nature are rude. By addressing the problem and ignoring personal attacts, we get the job done and don't waste time doing what someones parents should have done.

    Cheers.

Geez  What am I doing posting in the networking forum? I thought this was Win98. Oh well, Kazaa lite is still good stuff and if you want to share a single file on your own network, stick it in a folder, like Mike said.

Funny thing is,it works that way with Kazaa too. You can't share files there either without sharing the entire folder that they are residing in. Go figure. Some things work the same everywhere. ;) A network is a network...

I have another problem with the file I want to share. I am making a directory of my files with word and saving it as a web page. I have links to the files on my computer on it. When I click on the links on this computer it works fine but when I click on them with my other computer it can't find the links because the link says D:\folder\folder instead of using an internet address.

How would I make MS word put links in that are compatable with everyone's computer on the network?

On your single file sharing question!
Can you give more specfics about what you want to do? What kind of file do you want to share?

    On your HTML file!
I'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do! I think you say that you can access the html file of word documents from the local computer, but can not reach it from the remote network computer! If you have the network sharing set up correctly and can in fact see the folder on the computer then what you should do is browse with my cpmputer find the html file and create a shortcut to it on the desktop or where ever!

If this is not the answer make me understand! Smile!

Thanks for your comments Zep, ignorance I can tolerate but bad manners! No! Anyway I'll not respond farther!

Hope the weather issue goes away especially that it misses you! Weather here is great, my time of year! I am very hot natured so everyone else is wearing light to medium coats and I am wearing a longsleve shirt and love it!

Well, I think he means that the links are absolute insteadof relative. So on the network the link leads to: c:\dir\document.html instead of \\other_comp\dir\document.html

    Sorry AE

Forgot to answer your question on XP!

    A definate maybe!!! Smile!

Depends on the games! I don't play games but in cases where I have helped others with games on XP I have found most all work! And usually faster!

Some need some special setup! XP compatability mode, change Video settings etc.

Others need a utility to slow down the processor!

But why worry, install XP in a dual boot keep win98!

It is handy especially while installing and setting up XP! You may need to get back on the www to d/l a driver while installing! If you get it installed keep win98 so that if something happens to XP you can go back to win98 with a reboot.

And if a game don't work with XP it is there in win98!

Another advantage if you install XP on fat32 and not NTFS then you will be able to do some maintenance on the XP drive while in win98!

I use Etrust EZVirus in win2k full registered, in win 98 I use AVG antivirus! If I have a bad problem with virus's on either side I run one then reboot and run the other! The asumption here is that one may know something the other don't!

If you do decide to dual boot install it on another drive and I reccomend fat32 unless you have some critical security issues!

Dang it. I missed the "mike bashing ". Must have been on a section I don't visit often. Anybody post a link for me? I always love to read a bit of idiocy now and again.

Wondered why I hadn't seen mflynn in a while.

I got my answer, thank you. However, my network is down right now so I cannot test it.

I have one last question. If someone were to connect to my computer using dial up networking and I dial up server, would my directory page that has the links to my files slow down our computers like it does when we just cut and paste our files to each others computers?

What I mean is, he dials my phone number while I have dial up server waiting for his connection and our computers show up in the network neighborhood. It is just like a home network except very slow. The worst part is that when we copy and paste the files directly from their location on the computer they kind of lock up for a while. With a directory to all my files using links I am hoping that that will not happen. Do you think it will?

For posterity, how bout let us know what you did to correct your problem.

There may be someone else struggling with the same thing!

    As to your other question!!

This is one of those, don't ask the question if you cain't stand the answer, questions!

From your description it sounds as though you have a VPN connection! "Dialup server "?? Is this so?

If you have a "slow down" copying from computer to computer over the local network cable (assuming the minimum of 10 base). Then a phone connection has less than a single digit percent of that speed capability!

56.6 k= 56,600 bits per sec or 7200 bytes per sec
    10 mbp= 10,000,000 " 1,250,000 "
    100 mbp= 100,000,000 " 12,500,000 "

    See the difference!

How big are these files? How long does it take to xfer?

So far I think you need broadband if this is important!

    There are other possibilities!

    You may not like this!!!

One thing that would work better is the Remote desktop feature of XP! I mean it would work faster, almost full speed! Practical for you, I don't know!

Instead of xfering files or executing programs accross a wire the computer being called would be doing the processing locally so only keys and screens are transmitted from the calling computer!

This would require an XP computer as the call in and an XP to answer. And while the remote is connected, the local XP machine would be logged off as a workstation and could not be used! This unit would be still available as shared from elsewhere!

Remember I'm only giving the options here not reccomending!

If you want this feature but need the call in computer to connect in the back ground to allow use of the called computer as a workstation also, then you are ready for Server and Terminal Services!

Since I don't fully know what you are doing this is as far as I can go now!

One option to help would be to Compress (ZIP) the files before xfering especially over the modem! That would speed up that part but may be inconvienient if it has to be done often!

If we knew more of what you are doing then there may even be a totally different way of getting the required end result!

    Your move!!

    Mike

Teoren answered my question. I had to link through my network neighborhood instead of just directly to the file. My computer name is Andrew.

    \\Andrew\D:\Folder\File -- Like that.

I am not using VPN. I am using win 98 Dial up server. All that happens is I run the dial up server and it waits for a dial in connection from my freind who is calling my phone number. When he calls with his computer using DUN my DUS picks it up and we connect like a home network.

The problem is not that the files transfer slow (although they do) but that our entire computers kind of lock up until the files we copied and pasted are done.

Ok, tonight I left my computers dial up server program set to receive call and went to my freinds house to see if my links worked. They work here, but when I clicked on them they did nothing. I thought a download box would pop up but it did not.

Here is one for example that I copied with "copy shortcut" in IE:

    file://ANDREW/SETUP%20FILES/Software/Power%20archiver%202002.exe)

Any ideas as to why nothing happened?

I'll throw in an observation although I don't have an explanation.

Frequently when I set up to link a file and start with file://somepc/somefile.txt (or something)

I wind up with an additional / in the link (that I don't put there) so the working link would read

    file:///somepc/somefile.txt
