Why am I getting A(circumflex)£ when a price is shown on a web page.

Sometimes it will be 'a(circumflex)£ but instead of £, $ or € is shown.

A similar phenomena is shown instead of an apostrophe S etc;... But not

    Using the currency symbol.

This has only recently occurred on my PC, could it be that at sometime I

Have inadvertently pressed a wrong key or something similar??

I find this very annoying, and as a very elderly 'senior' I prefer my text in

Good old plain English or have I got to suffer what I would term an

    Un-necessary addition to our vocabulary

It would help if we knew your location ;)

If indeed you are in (or your hardware was designed for) the UK then switching to English(United Kingdom) would be appropriate.

Please see your User Control Panel to provide information like this and other important information such as completing your system details.

My apologies for not replying sooner, I am indeed located in the UK and since receiving your message I have been trying to follow the guidelines you Highlighted. Before I continue I have to remind you that despite my advancing years I am only a novice at this kind of work, as indicated in my profile, such as it is,and I will get back to you as soon as I have collated the information needed.

Have managed to collate my SYSTEM details and added them to User CP and added my location but cannot see them displayed anywhere.
I'm beginning to think that my problem is not down to my PC but a web problem as not all of the web pages I visit which quote prices use this annoying method. One of these web sites is my e-mail supplier IncrediMail. Your comments as to this possibility would be appreciated....Orlando

    Regarding your system details...

I can see your location just fine now ;)

Regarding the websites, it is the world wide web, not all sites will take account of your location and will only show prices in their local currency or could have issues with other currency.

Can you provide us with an example link?

    Hi

try playing around with the character encoding on your browser

(as a matter of interest, which browser(s) are you using?)

eg (using the Opera browser) check out the difference between:
    Opera (auto-detect)
    Opera (ISO-8859-1)
    Opera (Windows-1252)
    Opera (UTF-8)

I suspect that your browser is somehow "stuck" using ISO-8859-1 or Windows-1252, from your description. Try to find what your browser is set to, see if you can set it to auto-detect - or failing that, try UTF-8 temporarily as an experiment perhaps?

...this particular page specifies that it uses Unicode UTF-8, so (unsurprisingly!) if I set Opera to UTF-8 it also gives the correct result!

In general, auto-detect is the best bet to get most pages displaying properly ;)

...but if you get problems with a certain page, playing around with the other options may give you a better result

the commonest ones to try for this are
    Windows-1252
    Unicode UTF-8
    ISO-8859-1

    HTH & best wishes, HJ.

    PS

all browsers are different about how they handle the character encoding, and particularly about whether the auto-detect takes precedence over user selection - sometimes it just simply doesn't seem to work the way you think it should, and sometimes it makes no difference - even if you refresh

and some web pages are not written with "valid" HTML - if the web page doesn't conform to the standards, then all sorts of odd things happen...

if the web page has been written "properly ", then auto-detecting the character set should work

    best wishes, HJ

No. Most sites where a price is quoted for a commodity shows this phenomena.

Hi Hugh. I appreciate your endeavours to assist me but what you are showing me is way above my head. How to accomplish what you have shown is beyond my knowlege. The only thing I can tell you is that my browser is 'Windows Internet Explorer', at least, I believe it is as it always appears at the top of my tool bar when I am using the web......Orlando

    Hi Orlando

thanks for letting us know which browser you are using :)

using Internet Explorer: from the View menu, choose "Encoding" and make sure that Auto-Select is ticked like this (I'm using IE8 here)

then try refreshing the page! ...and let us know if it solves the problem please ;)

good luck & best wishes, HJ

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you, didn't realise I had to turn the page but here we are now.
I have carried out your instructions shown above and it appears to have done the old proverbial.
I went into a few websites that showed prices, including Tesco's and I am not seeing these horrible 'Odd Characters'. I'll not close this thread at the moment in case it's just a 'flash in the pan'. So expect me to get back to you(all) soon to confirm the good news and give you my undying thanks..Orlando

    Hi Orlando

cheers for the progress report :) sounding promising!

Certainly, it's commonsense to make sure the change "sticks" OK + good news that you've been checking out some other sites as well. It wouldn't be too clever if the fix for that particular site ended up breaking other web sites...

    best wishes, HJ.

Thank you for bearing with me over the last few days. I am pleased to say that after checking a number of sites I have come to the decision that I have ridded myself of those dreadded 'odd characters' which I never could have done without all of you helping me. So, with all sincerity.I once again say THANK YOU!!!....Regards.O W H Kinge.
