Windows Vista Installing driver on Vista

Recently a friend asked me to help him install a mapping program on his computer. He has Windows Vista.

The mapping program (Geolives) installed perfectly and functioned as desired. We then had to connect his Garmin Etrex handheld GPS to his computer using a usb-to-serial cable (the GPS only has a serial connection). I inserted the small driver disk which came with the cable, located the driver for Vista, clicked on it and went through the installation process and clicked finish.

Upon connecting the GPS I then got a message saying that a driver would be needed for this device and that I could let Windows search for one. It did a search on Windows update and found none. I then directed it to the cable driver disk and the Vista driver but it said that no driver was found.

So, I can't get his Vista to connect to the GPS because it keeps saying that I need a driver for the device - even though I have installed the driver successfully. I've tried another new cable and get the same result.

I've gone through the same procedure myself on my Win XP computer (I have the same GPS and cable) and everything worked perfectly. Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem here? Thank you.

Success! I followed your suggestion and everything went well. The GPS is now recognised by the computer.
