According to this link that should not have been a problem but you should be able to use system restore to get back to where you started. If there is no restore point remember to make one just before you make any other changes to the system.

Well, maybe it was removing Outlook Express that did it, but anyway it was a terrible problem (or would have been if not for system restore). None of what I found online (Kelly's Corner and another that seemed Microsoft related) did any good. I need to be more careful and less impulsive.

    Thanks

Hyperlinks in Wordprocessing Documents Don't Work

    1. In Metapad.exe (a notepad replacement) clicking on http://www.windowsbbs.com (which displays in blue to show it's a link) does nothing.

    2. In MS Word it invokes http://www.windowsbbs.com/FirefoxHTML\Shell\Open\Command. This will give way if allowed to to http://www.windowsbbs.com/ so it's not a big problem for this site.

    3. Other sites, however, ones I use all the time - my banks and online accounts, for example, either don't redirect, or more often redirect to "page not found ".

    4. I think this must have been caused by something occurring with the recent repair install; it always worked before.

    5. Also my on screen printer manual now crashes - but I'll take that up with Canon in the morning. This repair seems not to have gone as well as I thought.

    Any idea about the hyperlinks?

    Thanks

    Hyperlinks update

The problem exists with Internet Explorer and with both browsers on the unrepaired installation, though with completely different manifestations. Pasting a link into the address bar still works w/o problem.

Hyperlinks Bug Fixed by Reinstallation of IEX8

I find this very hard to understand, but
    1. I installed Internet Explorer 8 more than a month ago.
    2. When I checked this morning, I found I had IEX 6.
    3. When I reinstalled IEX 8 the hyperlink bug was fixed for both browsers and both word processors.
    4. It was not fixed for the old installation, so maybe I was mistaken in thinking it arose after the repair.

When you removed MSN explorer are you sure you didn't actually delete IE8 as that would have gone back to a previous version, was your previous version IE6? As you also uninstalled Outlook that may have added to the problems.

In future, unless you desperately need that extra few MB's of disc space I would leave all the standard Windows components installed. There is nothing else to be gained by removing them and as you have just experienced, problems can occur.

    Good Advice.

Incidentally, my on-screen printer manual stopped crashing after the reinstall of IEX8. It would be nice if there were fewer of these arcane interdependencies.:D

    Don't know.

I agree, but unfortunately that's the way it is so it has to be dealt with accordingly. As I said before you have nothing to gain from deleting MSN explorer or Outlook, it's best left alone.
