I’m trying to send a document by email using Outlook Express 6. (Win. XP SP3). I’m doing it as I always do by right-clicking on the document icon and selecting Send to Mail Recipient.

When I do this I get the following "˜Outlook’ message. (Not Outlook Express)

‘Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request.’

I’m guessing it’s a corrupted registry file in OE but I have no idea how to fix it. It turned out that it was indeed no longer set as my default Mail client and when I tried to change it back to default, it took several tries, and now that it is set as default, I still get the error message.

Can someone please help me with this?

    Thank you.

If you start a new mail message and attach the file that way does it work OK?

    Hi Steve,

Thank you. I hadn't thought of trying to send the files that way and it does work. However I'd prefer to be able to send them the other way which is easier when I'm emailing Photoshop image files.

I wondered if I might solve the problem by uninstalling Internet Explorer 8 and then reinstalling it. I did uninstall Outlook Express and reinstalled it but it didn't solve the problem. What do you think?

    Thanks again.

Did you go into Control Panel->Default Programs and set it there?

    Hi Steve,

Thank you. Yes, it's configured to use my current browser, which is Internet Explorer.

I did notice though in the Windows components list that it shows the size of the Outlook Express program to be 0.0 MB. It shows the same for Internet Explorer. Does that sound right?

Do you think I could solve this Outlook Express problem by uninstalling Internet Explorer and reinstalling it. If not, would a Win XP repair installation fix it?

    Your error is:

You need to be making sure Outlook Express is set as default - not IE.

    Hi Steve,

Yes, I realize that but when I go into Set Program Access and Defaults and go to Choose a Default e-mail programs, I don't get the option of selecting Oulook Express. For some reason it's not there. I just looked in my laptop and Outlook Express is there, but it's missing on this computer.

Can you tell me why it's missing and how to get it back?

    Thank you.

Well that sure would explain why you're getting the error.

I don't have an XP machine here... Maybe someone else can assist....

    Thanks, Steve,

When I uninstall Outlook Express from Windows components in the control panel and reinstall it, it doesn't help.

I looked in the registry and almost all the registry values for Outlook Express are missing.

If I were to delete all the registry values for Outlook Express and delete everything pertaining to Outlook Express from C:/ Programs, would I then be able to install a fresh installation of Outlook Express 6? If so, I guess I could download it from the web and do a fresh install of it, right?

    Hi bellisimo,

Your first post said this was an outlook error not OE (BTW it's neither)...

Do you have outlook installed on the problem computer?

    Hi wildfire,

No, I said I’m trying to send a document by email using Outlook Express 6. When I do this I get the following ‘Outlook’ message. (Not Outlook Express)

In other words the error message says Outlook rather than Outlook Express, which is the email program I use. I have Outlook installed but I've never configured it since I don't use it.

I have installed a fresh version of Internet Explorer 8 and updated it but it didn't fis the problem.

Many of the Outlook Express registry values are missing so I ran a file system checker and it didn't help either.

    Any thoughts?

In the Set Program Default function-> if you go to CUSTOM->Choose a Default Email Program-> Do you see OE there? If not - what options do you see?

The only option I see there is- Use my current email program. Outlook Express should also be there but it is not.

There are several Outlook Express registry values missing and I think that's what it causing the problem.

I've tried to reinstall Outlook Express 6 but I get a message saying that there is a newer version of Outlook Express on my computer than the one I'm trying to install and won't let me go any further.

Thank you all for your suggestions. It turned out that I had an infection that got past my antivirus program and I caught it today with Stopzilla, which I use when Malwarebytes doesn't find them, which is rarely.

I called Stopzilla and a technician took control of my machine and showed me all the damage the infection had caused. He quickly fixed it and now my computer is in excellent health.

Thanks again, everyone. Much obliged for you assistance.
