Windows Defender in Vista appears to be corrupt. I get the error message 800106ba. I did a search and found a registry import that didn't fix it. I basically can't start the service without getting this error. There is no restore point to revert to either so I was wondering if there is a utility to restore this feature? There is no un-install or re-install as it is imbedded.

Many thanks for any help that can be provided.

Just possibly, is your security software overriding Windows Defender in Vista? My TrendMicro Titanium automatically shuts down the Defender. FourDoor

It occured to me that it stopped working when I installed Microsoft Security Essentials. I uninstalled it and Defender popped right up. It appears they are incompatible; or, Security Essentials is performing the same function? Maybe an expert in the product can answer?

I checked the Microsoft answers: http://social.answers.microsoft.com...t/thread/5309cb8d-02e1-40e8-974f-0dcedb9ab9fd

It appears it does indeed. Case closed.

I'm not an expert, but I really think that the Security Essentials is probably doing the same thing, as does my Trend Micro Titanium security bundle. I think you probably have the issue resolved. That's my opinion. fourdoor

Perhaps this will help others who run into this issue in case I am not the only one.
