I tried to use TweakUI for WINXP to get rid of the logon screen. It didn't work, but I solved that problem with WINXP, itself.

However, I now get the following two error messages at startup:

    1) Are you sure you want to add the information in C:\DOCUME~1\user name\STARTM~1\Programs\Startup\COMPN!1.REG to the registry?

If I click "NO," it just comes back next boot.

And if I click "YES "
    2) Cannot import C:\DOCUME, etc. You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

Shall I ring Dell with this problem?

Follow the path you posted and send the "COMPN!1.REG" file to the Recycle Bin. Then reboot and you should be OK.

edit, Just out of curosity, you may want to right click that .reg file and select "Edit" and see what it was trying to add to your Registry. Post the contents if you want opinions.

    Thanks, Zephyr! That worked!

Now, since you're one who responded to my first question about loading Netscape and mail at startup, do you have any other suggestions about that? The shortcuts do show in msconfig in Startup. Still they do not load at startup.

Go back to the same path you posted above and check to see that the two shortcuts you are having trouble with are listed in that Start Up directory. If they are, right each one and choose "properties' and then look at the "Target" that is listed. Report back what it says.

The Target for the OE shortcut should say:

    C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe

I can't help you on the NS target since I don't have it. You'll have to Explore the Netscape folder for the correct executabe for the mailbox.

    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe "

    "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape\Netscp.exe" -mail

Try double clicking them and see if they open the programs.

If they work normally, then something is causing your Start Up folder to not be processed properly. Could be a failed or corrupt TweakUi install. Try uninstalling and re-installing it.

Sorry, I forgot to tell you when you asked before: Yes, they do open properly when I click on them in the startup folder. What's more, this was a problem before I installed TweakUI yesterday.

Do I call Dell yet? :)

Go into tweakUi and set any thing that you changed back to default values. Then reboot and uninstall TweakUi. Then reboot again and see if the problem persists.

If so, I would then be concerned about the .reg file you deleted earlier. Editing it might give some clue to what may have crashed and with that knowledge you may be able to riinstall whatever it was and then get some relief. if not you should be able to uninstall it and hope for improvement.

If all that fail to bear fruit, either call Dell or stick around until someone smarter shows up. :)

I did not see your earlier post per this problem. You have checked "Option" in N7 to open both at program load.
    Preferences | Appearance |
Show check marks for "Navigator" and "Mail and News Group ".

Dennis, I'm not sure I understand your reply, but I'd like your help.

My problem is that I can't get Netscape 7 and Mail to open with startup. They're in Programs\startup and in msconfig startup; still, they do not open unless I click on the Netscape icon.

If your note was asking if both are selected in Preferences\Appearance --- yes, they are.
