Older (4 years) Dell desktop unit, WIN XP/3 1GB ram, used as workstation.

All it does is blink at me.... It was working just fine and then the mouse died and had to be un- and re-plugged (PS/2), then it worked for a while (a hour or so) and suddenly just shut off. No flash, no beep, no smoke, no nuttin'.

Attempts to re-energize via the power button produce a flash on the power-on LED and then nothing. Holding the button in produces the same flash at appx 1-second intervals but the unit does not turn on.

There is another computer sharing the wall outlet and we swapped power cords to check the socket but with same result.

    Clues?

Disconnect the keyboard and the mouse. Have seen the same problem with the KB, not necessarily with the mouse. There is a 5V power that powers the KB and possible the same one for the mouse. You should try to substitute USB for PS2

    Just a thought.....

Sounds a lot like a failed PSU to me :(

No joy. Same result as above.
Sorry, my error: Mouse IS USB, Keyboard is PS/2

Can't do any harm, I guess. At least it would eliminate the PSU from the equation.

Well, boys.... DAT didn' woik nohow!

Ectually, I didn't get to do it... I have a dedicated person whose head comes to a point surmounted by a propellor and who took my suggestion and ran with it. The resultant mess of parts, case halves, unidentified RAM sticks, wires and disconnected hard drives, CPU's, peripheral ports and associated hardware items now covers three desks and a good portion of floor in one office.

We're buying a couple of new computers.

    Pfui on it.

Thanks for the thoughts, but occasionally it's more efficient to run like heck.

Nope, but the next time "Young Lochinvar" rides off to the East and leaves a mess like that for the Old Man to clean up, I'll be using the "Boot to Butt" method of computer instruction, even if I do have to stand on a chair to reach.
