Microsoft released a cumulative patch for Internet Explorer that includes the functionality of all previously released patches for IE 5.01, 5.5 and 6.0. In addition, this patch eliminates six newly discovered vulnerabilities.

Thanks for the heads up Arie. I have applied the patch. I hope the problem that I'm having with BBS cookies today isn't related to it. Things don't seem to be updating properly on the posts if I am logged in. When I log out, and check back as an observer only, things show up properly.

Hang in there and do not try anything drastic just yet.

I think it may be a general Internet problem.

I not only had trouble with this BBS not updateing but at times I could not get here at all. Even after deleting and building new Cookies.

I also had one heck of a time getthing the update package from Windows Updates. I kept getting " Page can't be displayed " and " Service not avalable. "

And this was on more than one machine.

I have two machine done and one to go but I think I wil wait till another day for it.

    Thanks Billybob,

I think I got it fixed. I dumped the TIF's and I'm back in business. I would have bet against that being the problem and thought more like it would be the cookie folder that was corrupt but it was only something amiss in the TIF's. Never had that happen before so I'm still a little suspicious of the Patch. :) I'll keep watching it for any possible encore.

Hope you have better luck than I did.

That is what I thought too. I was back in and back out of business within 30 minutes,

And all this was before the patch(s) and or Critical updates.

But for me it seems to be time of day related.

You are correct, it's back. This is rather inconvenient to say the least. The site page won't update after I post this so I won't be able to view my own post without doing some fancy licks. Refresh doesn't cut it at all. Logging out works but that's a bit of trouble when wanting to post again. Oh well, I can deal with it until times get better.

edit, well, it worked that time and I can view the post. Go figure. These one-eyed monsters can sure be mysterious at times.

Ok, the problem is officially corrected. I think it was probably caused by me aborting an install of Belarc Advisor today. I mistakenly clicked the wrong icon and instead of running Belarc (I've had it installed since forever) it started to install it. I just clicked cancel but even though it closed to install, I noticed some icons it had created. I just deleted them and thought no more about it until the problem hit me regarding the cookies here and the updating not occuring.

Anyway, to make a long story longer, I used good old GoBack and the problem is history. I shudder to think how hard it would have been to track down the specific cause. Thank God for GoBack!!

HAHAHA. The joke is on me. The problem is back.

For 15 minutes I could not get here, Windows Update Site or several other places from either machine.

This may be just another one of my WAGS but my gut feelings are right now that anyone having the problem should not just jump into making any un-necessary changes on their machine.

And I cannot blame the new patches etc. as it is no different than it was yesterday before them.

Just now DL'ed the November cummulative patch (Q328970). I got the file and installed myself.

My IE6sp1 now works better than it has in quite a while.

    For instance:
In this BBS, my habit is to "view latest posts" then go to the oldest and begin reading from there. When I finish a post, I click "Back" or hit "Backspace" and the page goes back to the search page (after a period of modem activity, as if the page had to be DL'ed again). When the search page appears it has the post I just read marked with the closed envelope indicator at the left.

Now it goes back instantly as in Netscape or Mozilla but the envelope is not closed now. However the post I just read has a dotted line around it which Mozilla and NS did not do. It is much easier like this to keep track of which posts have been read.

Now, if this fixes the problem I've been having with the modem stopping in it's tracks, I will be happy camper of the week.

If that means what I think it does your problem and mine may be in some way similiar

    Internet related and not IE.

For the record, the Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 version of the patch installed OK on my Win95B system even though the download page at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/q328970/default.asp said,

Well then there now Alice, since you have a non-supported system they can't just give you honorary mention can they now? You will need to send some money to the Zephyr travel fund in order to get the proper recognition. :D or is that D:, whatever.

Wake up! You've been left out in the cold by MS. You haven't spent any money with them since 1995, so you will no longer be supported. :D Ain't it great? 1998 was a "long time ago" according to MS's Craig whats-his-face. I shudder to think what they consider 1995 to be! :D

    Cheers.

I'm still angry about the Java VM 3805 patch that I had to find with a groups.google search since Windows Update no longer has current downloads for Window 95.

I'm getting tired of the MS BS.

For a more secure system, a patch sets the Kill Bit and is not recommended to "unkill ".

This may be problematic as Windows Update Active X is installed to gather info about the software versions installed as well as info on components to compare with newer available versions. Active X is the linchpin of Windows Update functionality as well as other useful features.

The Kill Bit stops Active X from running in IE. Apparently one has learn the CLSID for features wanted and then add it in the registry after the "kill" procedure for unwanted features.

    KenKeith,

I'm not sure what you mean by "The Kill Bit stops Active X from running in IE ". I think the patch only disables a certain activeX control that may or may not be installed:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-066 mentions this under Technical Details, and also under the FAQS,
    The link for http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;810202
says that the Nov 2002 IE cumulative update patches the security vulnerability in the DirectX Files Viewer control "Xweb.ocx ", a file I don't have on my system.

    Alice,

Thanks for the response and clarification to my misreading (may need glasses) of the Kill Bit link.
Correctly read it is "How to stop an ActiveX Control... ".

If I understand, ActiveX control programs have full access to the computer resources; a feature necessary if Windows Update is to function properly. Then I read one modifies the data value of the Compatibility Flags for the CLISD to stop ActiveX, and there is a warning and a MS disclaimer from incorrect Registry entries. I had the impression the user makes choices, but the patch disables a certain activeX control that may or may not be installed. The patch is activeX specific and doesn't require user intervention.

    Hi KenKeith,

OK, I see what happened. The Kill Bit link took you to an article that explained it in general terms. I guess Microsoft could have made it a bit clearer. I've noticed other MS links that take you to pages that give a general definition of terms instead of giving you specific details.
