I can't copy or burn on a system I previously could. When trying to burn with Nero I get the error half way disk read failed this also happens in DVDFab8 and any other software I use. I have tried different media and changed the DVD burner as well as the IDE cable still the same problem. I also re-installed the OS went from Vista to Windows 7 I need help bad.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Sounds a lot like you have hard drive problems - I would check it out using the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software (DOS version from a bootable CD) ......

    Disk Diagnostic Software ....

    ExcelStore

    Hitachi/IBM

    Samsung

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum

    Western Digital

As you cannot burn on your computer you will need the use of another to burn the CD.

As a sidenote - when you installed Windows 7 did you also install the chipset drivers, etc for 7?

I was able to burn the image to the HD as an ISO and then write to the DVD later but even this option only works about 20% of the time.

May be a freak media problem I was able to copy a DVD I recorded last year with no problem. I tried another disc the problem returned went back to the one from last year no problems.

As I understand it you have successfully burnt the hard drive diagnostic CD -= if this is the case have you run it and what were the results?

Would you please confirm that the disk read error occurs during the burn cycle as opposed to the verification cycle.

From your last post you say that you were able to burn one disk from a specific file successfully on 2 occasions, but other files failed to burn with disk read errors.

I still wonder if there are problems on the hard drive as these files would be in different positions on the drive.

IMO you should run the disk diagnostics ASAP.

    DVD won't copy

Ran the disk checks the drives pass every check. What baffles me is why that one disk will work no matter which software I use to copy it and 80 percent of the others fail.

On the basis that the replacement DVD drive and cable are known to be good a hardware fault on the motherboard is a strong possibility.

I am pretty much out of ideas on this and will see if I can get an assist from other Team Members.

Does the error message only say: "disk read failed "

    DVD won't copy

No matter what software I use the error says basically error failure to read from disk. DVDFAB gives the error in the exact same sector no matter which DVD I put in to copy.

And at what speed are you burning? I would never burn at max speed - 4x or thereabouts is quite fast enough :)

As the hard drive passed muster a check of the computer memory is in order ....

For a start type memory in the Orb > search box and then double click on Memory Diagnostics in the list of hits. Such tests are not conclusive, but may throw something up.

    From your first post:

Was anything changed in the system, like new software, when the problem first started?

I am burning at 4X yes some software has changed but it should not have caused a copy problem. I have also changed from Vista on which the problem occurred to a clean install of windows 7

I have another copy going now it has passed the usual error spot, almost as if the problem has self corrected after a week.
