Hello, my CD/DVD drive which is "D" drive shows nothing in it when I load a DVD with a movie on it in that drive. Also the PC has XP in it and I have I believe MP 11 in it and MP doesn't open up to play a movie. PC use to show movies no problem on Windows MP but had to do a XP format/reinstall and since then having these problems. Any help would be great,
    Thanks kindly,
    ~Paul

Windows XP includes Media Player 5.1. You will only have Windows Media Player 11 if you have downloaded it. As you have just reinstalled XP I would suggest you download WMP 11.

I would also suggest, if you haven't done so already, that you download SP3 as SP2 is no longer supported which leaves your system wide open to attacks from the internet. Go here and all the required updates should be made available to bring your system up to date.

After you have done that please also advise what model your PC is as I presently don't know if I am dealing with a laptop or desktop PC. Please check in your Bios to see if the CD/DVD drive is being recognised.

Are these movies ones that you've burned yourself or are they store bought DVD movies? If the latter, it could be just a copy write protection issue. Before you formatted and reinstalled Windows is it possible you had some special driver installed for this that you've forgotten about? Try downloading and installing Passkey Lite. It's a driver that will allow you to watch most protected DVDs.

I don't know it this the problem or not but it's worth a try anyway.

My suspicion is that the DVD side of the drive has failed. Does it read a data DVD?

I'm guessing that the CD side is OK as you just loaded Windows.

Different lasers are used for DVD & CD.

You could always check the drive in another computer for confirmation.
