In an effort to solve a slow Clear wireless internet on a WD digital ATA 320 GB Hardrive I did a clean install of Window XP Home edition on a Seagate 40 GB hardrive, formatted with only a C:/ partition. No additional programs installed, and no anti virus. I did the speed tests with Speedtest.net. My typical speeds ran from 1-2 mbs download .5 upload and ping 90. After I updated SP2 including hardware update I got best speed which I have had with Windows XP until now. I got 4.36 download .46 upload and 83 ping. I went ahead and installed SP3 and my computer went back to previous slow readings. I repeated tests on IE 6,7 and 8, and even tried Google Chrome, with no significant change. I have tried a laptop with windows XP Pro and it does not drop below 3 download. What can SP3 be doing to slow my wireless connection? Should I try to purchase the XP professional edition?

Here is some of my installed hardware

    K7S5A Pro MB
    Athlon XP 1800+ processor
    1024 MB Total Physical Memory
Seagate Barracuda 40GB 7200.7 ulta ata
Netgear WGT624 Router I ran tests with Router bypassed.

When I had my Router connected I went into router setup and checked box to allow ping tests. That had been giving me an upload error.

I had 4 bars on my Clear Motorola home modem. Clear support assures me 2 bars are sufficient. 5 bars is Maximum displayed on modem.

I did search this site before posting with . "Clear Wireless slow after installing SP3" with no results. Frank

This disk had Debian Lenny installed. before I formatted disk for this trial Windows XP installation. I did a speed test and got 8.38 dowload .56 upload and 83ms ping test.

SP3 enabled the Windows Firewall service, amongst other things.
Try test without the firewall "on ".
Also, try updating the network adapter drivers.

Thanks Tony. I tried with windows firewall off and had updated my network adapter driver. I am still have not installed any programs and or anti virus. Frank

My speeds were from 107 download .41 upload 89 ms ping to as high as 1.80 download .35 upload 97 ping. I did test but all were in the same range.

Try this for the wifi connection:

Control Panel > Network > rt click wifi adapter > select Properties.

    Uninstall QoS Packet Scheduler

Double click TCP/IP Internet Protocol > Advanced button > Wins tab > uncheck Use LM Hosts & check Enable netbios over TCP/IP

    Power off modem, router, comp.
Power on modem & let it sync with ISP.
Power on router & let sync with modem.
    Power on comp.
    Test speeds here: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?more=1

Try tests that do NOT use Flash. If do tests that use Flash then update Flash to latest version from Adobe prior to testing.

Before trying anything I tested with dslreports.com as you suggested and I get download speed of 4,808 kbps, and I take that to be the same as 4.8 mbps. so that would be about as fast as I would expect or faster than I am getting when I use speedtest.net. Its below average for my area, But I could live with that for now. I will have to check later how it does with my wireless connection to my laptop does down stairs using the same tool to measure speed. Thanks I still plan to follow your steps to see if there is any improvement. I have two XP systems, one with programs installed and one without that I am testing. I just tested the fully loaded one, and with security cameras running.
    Thanks again Frank.

This afternoon I tested a Dell Latitude cpt Pentium 3 and got 5.22 mgbs download and .92 upload with 77 ping. I could not get Dsl going yet so I had to use Speedtest for now. Still it surprised me that a slower processor but with Windows xp Pro installed, performed faster. I will continue with your suggestions and see what happens. Thanks.

Correction, I was getting connections problems with Dsl reports. I used digital landing.com thinking it was dsl reports. I don't know if the readings are as accurate as dsl reports.

Which Clear Internet plan do you have?
They have several plans, some with "no cap ", but don't expect to ever get unlimited 4G upload and download rates. Wimax rates are governed by the ISP and when they state "no caps" that means you get unlimited bandwidth per month. In other words there's no limit to the amount of data you can transfer up or down in a month. But the speed of those transfers is set by the ISP, and your speeds will vary depending on amount of users on the network and other factors.

I have no cap on speed. I forgot to mention, the system I am testing is connected by ethernet cable. The signal coming in to Wimax modem of course is wireless, but I have an ethernet cable from modem to router and from router to main computer and to one other computer. Should I still make the changes you suggested on the previous post, for the computers connected by ethernet cable?

Wimax 802.16 is capable of 128 mbits/s.. 802.16m is capable of 1gbit/s fixed and 100 mbit/s mobile. However, that bandwidth is shared by all subscribers, which reduces the rates for every user.

You DO have a speed cap.

What speeds can I get from Clear?.

CLEAR offers speeds comparable to cable and DSL for home and up to 4x faster than you can get with mobile broadband from a cellular company. To provide you with the Internet you want, where you want it. CLEAR supports average download speeds up to 3-6 Mbps and upload speeds up to 1Mbps.

Distance, interference from other wifi signals and other factors will reduce rates too.

Your download and upload rates are well within the expected rates from Clear. I see nothing awry with the rates you are getting.

If you understand this, please mark this thread as Resolved.

I from the start, suspected Clear Wire with 4 bars showing on my modem and achieving 8 mgbs with linux, that Clear Signal was not the problem. Here is a sample of todays test, using Athlon amd processor and linux as a the server.

    Speed Test #94689896 by dslreports.com
    Run: 2011-01-21 15:27:31 EST
    Download: 5473 (Kbps)
    Upload: 722 (Kbps)
In kilobytes per second: 668.1 down 88.2 up
    Tested by server: 55 java
    User: 2 @ dslreports.com
    User's DNS: clearwire-wmx.net
Compared to the average of 70 tests from clearwire-wmx.net:
    * download is 143% better, upload is 27% better

I am looking at the monitor running off Windows XP, ethernetted to Netgear modem, and I Download speed 5028, kbps and 776 kbps upload, 123% better

The wireless laptop with windows xp pro, and pentium 4 processor downstairs also did better with linux server. I got 5.8 mbps download and .88mbps upload, but had to test with speedtest.net.

I hope we agree that trying to tweak either linux, XP home edition or any operating system to get the maximum speed, is not something we should give up on., but should continue to persist with. But if you think its wise to close this, as resolved, I can go through the motions of clicking resolved, But since "necessity is the mother of invention, I think this issue of sorts will last for eternity. :). By the way, I am very happy with Clear 4g and their Clear Spot. Thanks Tony for helping me through this. Frank
