I have a Toshiba Satellite L305D laptop and the select button (left) below the touchpad does not work. Tapping the touchpad does not work either. The right button works fine. I've been using a USB mouse without a problem. I have reloaded the Synaptics driver to no avail. Any advice to a solution?

I'd have suspected a hardware issue with your left button but with tapping also not working perhaps it's software.

A couple of things to check...

    1) Is tap to click ticked/checked when you right click on the Synaptics tray icon?

    2) Does the problem occur with the right button if you select Left Handed in Pointing Device/Mouse properties?

Wildfire...Tks for the quick reply. Tap to Click is checked on the Synaptics tray icon.
Also when I changed to left hand mouse operation, double tapping the touchpad is now selecting fine but the left button did not do anything. Well the touch pad is working now but the left button still is inactive...

    OK that makes sense,

I'm almost certain your left button is stuck down, it is a hardware issue. Unfortunately I can't advise on how to repair other than general cleaning tips and trying to gain some movement by gently prising the button with a small screwdriver etc.

It may be better to take the system in to a reputable computer repair shop.

You are probably right...I see the left button is sitting slightly lower on the outside than in the middle. I'll try some "delicate" manipulation. Great help!

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance but it is definitely hardware.

Please let us know how you get on.
