We plan on buying a laptop for my wife and for trips. I currently have a desktop PC with a direct high speed modem provided by my provider (AT&T)
I think I will need a wireless modem so both computers can access internet.
I need to know what to buy, what to look for in a laptop and some idea what to expect in installing this setup since I have never done this before.
Any input will be apreciated, thanks

You will need a wireless modem or router, other than that the setup for modern OS's is fairly simple.

I'd suggest you contact AT&T customer service for advice in case there is special considerations (eg with my provider only modems that they provide with registered MAC addresses will work). Then pay a visit to your local computer store and ask them for further advice. Stick with the better known brands (Linksys, Belkin, Netgear etc)

Once you have your modem/router be sure to secure the wireless connection (post back here with make & model number and someone will assist).

As far as the laptop is concerned all you'll need is a WiFi interface (most will have one), ask before you buy ;) Other specifications would depend on what you will actually use the laptop for.
