Can you replace the CD drive temporarily and see what effect that has? Longshot, but you never know :)

I might have an external USB one, but I do not have a replacement CD-ROM to fit the tower, no. Would you like me to test the USB CD-ROM if I can find it?

First remove the CD-ROM from your Tower and the IDE cable as well. Then try with a different one like you said USB etc. I think it's a good idea if you can find a different disk as well. A bad image can cause problem.

I'm not sure if it's a symptom or not, so I'll post: the external CD-ROM I have access to is an external USB iomega DVD drive. Old one, too. When I plug it in, the software is not automatically loaded (as the iomega site says it should).

    I am instead told I have plugged in a "Cypress AT2LP RC58. "

I'll look for another external drive, though. Let me know if you have some other ideas, though. Sorry.

EDIT: To save time, here's one (first) of many similar google results. http://www.mvixusa.com/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=74
