    Hi Folks,
I have just purchased a second hand DVD RW drive (HP635) and all is working fine except that whenever my PC automatically goes into, or I put into Standby the drive does not work on WakeUp. I either have to disable it then re-enable it in Device Manager or completely reboot the PC.
    Anybody any ideas ?? please.

Is it a SATA or IDE drive and what OS are you using.

Is it correctly recognised in the Bios.

Have you bought this from a reliable source, may be it was sold because of this fault.

    Hi Mark,
It's an IDE drive and OS is XP Pro SP3.
Bios recognises the drive o.k. but I am not sure what settings I should apply to it. Have tried juggling the settings a little bit but am not really sure of what I am doing.
Current Bios settings are:- Secondary IDE Slave (Slave to a CD RW drive & jumper settings are set to Slave), Type = ATAPI Removable, PIO Mode = Auto,
    Ultra DMA = Mode 2.
No, it wasn't bought from a reliable source (Ebay) but was sold as 'working perfectly'

I take it you have another CD/DVD drive set to master that is on the end of the ribbon cable with the slave in the middle.

See if you can find settings in the bios to Auto detect IDE devices.

I'm not sure that setting "Removable" would be correct, what else can you change it to.

That model number HP635 doesn't get a result other than a digital camera when searched for. Check the model number and search on the manufacturers support site for a firmware update, download and install it.

Yes, your assumption about the other CD Drive is correct.

The 'Types' I can choose from are:- 'None', 'User', 'Auto', 'CD Rom',
'Atapi Removable', 'Other Atapi', 'IDE Removable'.
I have already tried the 'Auto' & 'IDE Removable' options and have just reset to 'CD Rom' to try that.

The drive is actually a HP635 I (sorry for confusion) and it will will come up on HP Website. I have actually already installed latest firmware.

Either CD ROM or Auto should work.

I found the drive on the HP site but the download of the manual was taking forever.

One more suggestion is to put the jumpers on both CD/DVD drives to Cable Select, give it a try and if still no change swap the drives positions on the ribbon cable and try again.

One final thought would be to try the drive on another PC, if still no joy I can only assume the drive has a fault and you should return it for a refund.

New drives can be bought very cheap these days from places like Novatech so I would go for a new one, less than 20€ (no pound sign on my spanish keyboard) should get you a half decent drive.

I think I have finally overcome this problem by installing an updated driver for my IDE controller. Hope this might help someone else in the future. Thanks all for your interest.
