Now in Windows 2000, but similar in W98: I use right click to make a new file, and Windows has all sorts of choices that I DON'T WANT, including programs that I deselected during installs. To compensate :p Win won't let me add programs I DO want. How do I get control of my PC from you know who? I want to add and remove "new" choices. (If this is covered in archives, what are good keywords to search?)

Here's what I have in my archives for removing items. As to "Adding" anything, you're own your own there.

Removing Items from NEW on the Desktop

When you right-click on the desktop and select New, a list of default templates you can open up are listed.
To remove items from that list:

    Start Regedit
    Search for the string ShellNew
This should bring you to HKey_Classes_Root
For the items you want to remove, simply rename the ShellNew command
Renaming is safer that deleting it
Continue searching for the items you want to remove
You do not need to reboot for the change to take effect

I will add, rename it using something unique that you can easily find using the "Find" function of Regedit. That way if you ever want the item back, it's fairly easy.

edit: I reviewed this archive and found it was created back when I had Win95 so it may not work for 2k.

    shellnew

You are on my wavelength, but
I found a lot of "shellnew" under applications,
such as under various file extensions, but did
    not see what you describe.
Could you show me a full line example?
    thnx

Take a look here. Also know that TweakUi can do what you ask in this regard.
