I like Adobe--as I said above, its latest versions (9 and 10) are much faster than they were before. I use this for basic reading, and when I'll just be copying/pasting text. It reads all pdfs flawlessly.

I still use PDFXChange for PDF editing--when I want to mark one up, or fill out forms, enter any information. Also, PDFXChange lets you modify the toolbars, maintains a recent files list that allows you to pin docs that you really like. Their help forums are just that--places where you get help, and often from employees doing free support. And if you really like to tweak, they will let you save a file that stores all your settings/modifications so you can install them again on another machine, etc. Only reason why I don't use it all the time is that sometimes (esp. with Google books, which tend to be incredibly large files) it takes a while to display the pages, which can be a drag. So Adobe for reading, pdfxchange for editing.

I had some really odd problems trying to open my other portables after upgrading portable Foxit.

    I replaced it with Sumatra.

    Problem solved. :)

Has anyone else had problems after upgrading Foxit portable?

    Foxit and PDFs

I do not know if this is similar problem but I downloaded Foxit and cannot read pdf files...I get nothing. Never had that problem with Acrobat.

What am I doing wrong or not doing right?

If you download from their site make sure you check the 'radio button' for EXE Installer, otherwise it will download as a Zip file. When you have the EXE Installer just run it as you would any installer & follow the wizard.

I will give PDF whatever a try...Foxit has not worked well for me, all the files are blank.

I will never use Adobe products again as they left me hanging with one of their other apps, after I paid big bucks for it with another vendor...this after they told be to ditch it and reload it, which did not work.

I will try the PDF Exchange for a time and see how that works.

@Hive, I also had a few problems with Foxit, although it was mainly updating gremlins I think. Either way, PDF-X supports both 64 & 32 bit Operating Systems, & so far it seems the best freeware PDF Reader I have used. Their support forums are pretty helpful as well. Do remember that there are a plethora of freeware readers out there though.

At work I often use pdf-files. I have used the Adobe Reader, Foxbit and PDF-XChange Viewer. Now I use PDF-XChange. I like it! Without doubt the fastest, most feature rich alternative to Acrobat available. The new version has some new nice features (as you can change colour, fonts or main background according to your style and mood, you can close even a single opened tab without closing the Viewer itself, you can also open/close pop-ups grouping them by colour, ...). The pro version is a pleasure and provides all of the pdf page manipulation tools. (and it isn't expensive)

A few days ago, I downloaded PDF Converter from this site. Today, I copied the file from one location to another. Norton squealed like a pig and removed the file, claiming it was infected with Trojan.Gen.

I don't know if it was a false positive but wonder if anyone else has made the same experience? No matter what, I took no chances such as downloading once more. Be careful ... ... !

WOT gives this site a green rating but someone else has reported something similar. Link to WOT scorecard

VirusTotal gives a clean bill of health as well.

Interesting, that other "single occurrence" was almost six months ago!

In my case, Norton didn't set off the alarm when I downloaded the file but ... ... when I copied it to a backup location.

Have you tried scanning the original file with something like MBAM or SUPERAntiSpyware?

    Try VirusTotal.

No, I haven't scanned the file by any other means. I run Adobe Acrobat myself and downloaded PDF Converter as an alternative to test for the future.

VirusTotal is now among my Favorites, thanks!

I downloaded the file again, from the same source but that doesn't necessarily mean that it was the same file. IE8 popped up a message that "SmartScreen had found no threats" and as I recall, the same message was popped up the previous time. I immediately ran a scan (Norton) which found no threats. This indicates a "false positive" the previous time if it was the same file.

I went Google on "pdf_converter.exe" which among other pages returned this one: PDF_CONVERTER.EXE, Prevx indicating that the jury is still out.

    Adobe is Out

I went from to Foxit, which did not work, then to PDF Exchange and the latter works every time.

OK good. If you use Google Chrome or SRWare Iron there is an extension at Google Extensions.

I just have the site on bookmark though. :)

    My guess is that it's a false-positive.
