I have an old Dell 4100 in the basement of my home that is running on XP Pro. It has quit acquiring an IP address and finding the internet.

My "network HQ" is set up in a spare bedroom that we use for a home office.

    - DSL modem
    - D-Link wireless router
    - Two Vista desktops wired in (no problems there)
    - A Linksys wireless adapter on the old computer in the basement

Additionally, my personal laptop (XP Pro) and my college kid's Macbook both hook in fine via wireless. So the desktop in question is the only trouble spot.

Originally the network was set up with a Linksys router but it died, so after I finished choking and gagging over prices of new ones I opted for the D-Link.

As noted the other units work fine. But on the old Dell I've refreshed and repaired, and done config release and renew at the dos prompt. I've also dug around in the properties, etc. but still no progress.

The Linksys configuration utility finds the signal and locks, so there is a signal problem.

Mainly, it will not find the web.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Merry Christmas to all, and thanks in advance for the help,
    Rick

Don't use the Linksys connection utility. It will be set to auto load at boot either via the registry or via Start meny > Programs > Startup. Openthe utility and there should be a setting to let Windows manage the connection. If so, enable it. Then delete the startup reference(s) for the Linksys utility using Start > Run > msconfig.

Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services and set Wireless Zero Config to Automatic + Started.

The while in Control Panel, double click Network > rt click Wireless adapter > select Properties and put a check in the 2 boxes at the bottom of the dialog.

Tony, thanks. I sneaked downstairs for a few minutes and ran through those steps and there is nothing that opens on the Linksys configuration utility to allow the step you noted.

We are expecting company to begin arriving shortly for the holiday. I'll have to get back to it tomorrow.

    Thanks again.

Update: I am still stumped on this issue.

I followed the steps outlined above as best I could determine. The computer still did not find the web.

Then, I went to the computer that controls the router and ran the network setup wizard and put the files on a flash drive. From there I ran the wizard on the XP unit. Still no connection.

The antenna sees the wireless signal with the Linksys utility disabled, or when the utility is enabled. It's not a signal issue.

My work is busy right now so I am not getting much time to delve into it and I hate to just leave it hanging out as unresolved.

But, any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Run this command from a command prompt on the machine that's not connecting: cmd /c ipconfig /all>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

Copy/paste the output in your next reply.

10-4. I'm on my way out to work as soon as I gather my stuff so I'll boot it up and do that this evening.

    Thanks.

Your DHCP server was not found...

You could try a reset of your TPC/IP. Run this command:

    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

After you executed the command, reboot your PC.

Do you have a similar Network Card that you can try in the PC. Are there any cordless phones nearby? if so switch them off and try the connection again. Look for any driver updates for the network card, completely uninstall the existing drivers then download the latest driver and reinstall it.

Do you have security setup on the router? if so follow this short guide.

On your PC click on Start and goto the Control Panel and double click on Network Connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection and click on Properties. Now on this window, click on the second tab Wireless Network and give a check mark on "Use windows to configure my wireless" and then remove all the network names present in the Preferred Networks Window. Then click on OK...
Right click on the Wireless Network Connection again and click on View Available Wireless Networks and try to re-connect to your network...
Now it will give you the opportunity to input the network/wep key, make sure you enter the correct network key and confirm it...

Gentlemen, I apologize for my 2 week absence from this thread. My work involves several periods each year of extended, 24/7 on-call and I have been absolutely slammed as a result.

Mark, I do have another network adapter (USB wireless) and plan to try it. Before I install that driver I will completely uninstall the older Linksys driver and the antenna.

Hopefully I will get some time Friday afternoon to jump those hoops.

    Thanks again,
    Rick
