Resolved Outlook 2010 Send/Receive Slow on Startup

I have a new HP Probook 4520 with 4Gb RAM and running Win 7 64 bit and Office 2010. Everything runs well and Outlook 2010 loads quickly. However, the first send/receive action after a shutdown or any other action that requires me to log in again takes a very long time to complete. After that first time, it's adequately fast. Is there anything I can do to speed up that first operation? The send/receive dialog box timing bar sits with the green part about halfway along for one or two minutes before suddenly completing.

Also, how can I stop the send/receive operation happening automatically whenever Outlook starts? I haven't been able to find where to disable this.

Glad you spotted my deliberate mistake, Pete! To Steve, I don't have it starting Outlook automatically on Windows startup and may not start Outlook for minutes or hours after bootup. The problem is usually, if not always, there on first send/receive.

 

The scanpst.exe file referred to in the link suggested by Pete doesn't seem to exist. I tried searching and looking where the document said it would be, but nothing there. However, I found there was a repair function in the Programs and Features part of Control Panel. I've just run that and it seems to have improved. I'll watch it over the next few days and report back.

 

Yes, it does seem strange. That folder contains a folder called 1033 and 19 files, but no scanpst. I ran the repair tool from Control Panel and Outlook seemed much more responsive this morning. I'll keep monitoring it.

 

Pete: The Program Files folder contains a Microsoft Office folder that has an Office 14 folder as I described. But, I've now discovered there's another folder called Program Files (x86), and it has a Microsoft Office folder with an Office 14 folder that seems to be what you're describing. It has the scanpst file, so that mystery is solved. I don't understand why I have two program folder and what x86 means, but at least I now know it's there. Perhaps it relates to the 64 bit version of Win 7. I also don't understand why the scanpst file wasn't found when I did a search for it from the start menu search function.

I hope that one day I'll understand Windows 7 - it's still very new to me.

 

Thanks for the explanations Pete. I still don't understand why I have Office in both program files folders - I can't remember if I was given the option of 32 or 64 bit versions of Office when I installed it, but if I was I would have chosen 64 bit. Obviously it doesn't matter as it functions OK but I find it odd that it is in both locations.

You're right about the indexing options being turned off for C drive. Is there any disadvantage in turning it on?
