I am in a big mess. Windows XP, SP 2. Have 2 OS install disks which I fought to get from Dell. Had a problem about 3 years ago, cannot remember specifics, called Dell support. Simple problem but tech had me start partitioning drives. I knew that wasn't needed! Had to go back and repair windows.

    Then - restore vanished???

Now I am stuck at cannot load kernel dlls.

Been to safe mode, command prompt, repair, etc.

    Nothing.

Tried the fix master boot, etc. To be truthful, I have no idea what I'm doing.

I would just re-install windows XP but am wondering if it will ask me the OEM number. I suspect the OEM installed by Dell on the computer is different than what's on the OS disks.

Anyone know? If I could get the OEM number off the disks, I would just re-install.

At this point, I'm ready to get out Windows 98 and install. Is the FAT the same. Will I get into problems.

I said I had intermediate knowledge. Finding out I really don't. Took an A+ certification class in 1998 for a lark. Never really worked in computers but have been able to fix some problems.

But now I am in big trouble.

When I had the problem 3 years ago, I found a good tip for Dell owners. If you click problem not resolved on the Dell web page, you can contact a tech in the United States.

    HELP. Thanks.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

The Dell cd will not prompt you for a keycode if you're installing on a Dell machine. It also won't need to be activated.

Thanks Steve. That's a relief. If worse comes to worse, I'll re-install.

I do backup (on occasion), so I won't loose a lot. However, if I could get back into the Dell, it would be nice.

    Is restore still there somewhere?

When my Dell was under warranty and I called the tech for help, he didn't seem to understand my problem. Perhaps that was my fault, but I suspect he was brand new. He kept putting me on hold to ask his supervisor.

Also, will Windows 98 install on this computer?

I really, really appreciate your help. It's comforting to know I can get my Dell back. I have a newer computer, but I like that old Dell.

One problem I have is living surrounded by National Forest. Dial-up speeds range between 21,000 and 28,600. Nothing else is available. We cannot get a cell signal. So downloading anything is a major hassle.

    I have another related question.

Having a double boot would be nice (thinking of windows 98). Do I partition and then
install XP on parition 1 and 98 on parition 2 - or is partition 1 simply a boot partition.

If I put in the 98 disk, go to command prompt, will I be able to see existing
files on the computer. The xp disk won't do this. The somehow (maybe) I could
copy non-windows files to a CD to restore after a fresh XP.

Sorry my thought processes were not together in the original post.
