    Hi

When it comes to computers i'm a complete amatuer, so please bear with me.

Yesterday i was given a brand new, never been used 1Tb seagate sata hdd. So today i diceded to buy a USB to Sata hdd enclosure to turn it into a external hardrive.
I have set up the enclosure and hdd according to the manual, plugged the USB into the laptop and let the drivers install themselves which were all succesfull.

Now here's the problem the manual says at this point there should be a new drive icon in "my computer" for access to the new storage drive. but for what ever reason the new drive is not there and i dont know how to access the hdd

Does anybody unerstand why the hdd isn't showing in my computer after installing all the drivers.

    Thank You

    Joe

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

It would have been helpful to have posted your Operating System .....

Plug in the drive and power it up.

Right click My Computer > Manage

In the Computer Management window click on Disk Management

Is the drive listed there? Is it shown as being formatted? Does it have a drive letter?

    thanks for the reply pete

the operating system is windows vista, i did what you said and here is a picture of my disk management.

    http://img820.imageshack.us/i/98706996.jpg/

as you can see my laptop hdd is split into 3 partitions which are in the list at the top with no mention of the external hdd. but at the bottom under disk 0 my 1tb hdd is named as disk1 but is unallocated.

someone has suggested that i try formatting the hard drive. But as the hdd is not mentioned is the list to the top im not sure how to do this, as right clicking the bottom were it says the hdd is unallocated does not give an option to format

    He/she is right.

Look closely in the bottom half of the Disk Management window. There are 2 disks - Disk 0 which is the disk inside your computer & Disk 1 [931.51 MB] which is the external hard disk. You need to initialise & format Disk 1 before it can be accessed by Windows.
