It seems unlikely, to me anyway, that DX9 has much to do with this.

In any case, download this file and put it on a Win98/ME boot disk. It is a program to delete partitions that has a simple GUI for those who like that convenience. It will remove even the most stubborn partitions and you can then try reinstalling with a clean drive.

well I just tried a data lifeguards floppy that came with hard drive and it just goes to black screen that says Press a key to reboot...
I tried the same disk on another work puter and it works..

actually I just pulled the CMOS battery out to clear it and now it boots to the data life guards boot disk and im writting zeros to drive...think that might have done it ..when its done ill try to install xp from cd hope that works :)

You mention the word "reinstall ". So did you yourself successfully install XP from the same CD as you are using now?

Try a different graphics card, if available, until the reinstallation is done. Then return yours.

Try to be sure all is the same as when you succeeded last time to see if that helps.

Check all your connections and be sure memory and boards are well-seated in their slots (even if they LOOK fine, it doesn't hurt to slide them out and back in to be sure).

There is a BIOS update (1011) available for that board, too:
    http://download.asus.com.tw/mb_dl_menu.asp?l1=1&l2=10&l3=13&mid=1

If you have a UDMA cable for your HD, be sure it is enabled in BIOS. And the opposite is true, too---if you have only the 40-wire cable, be sure UDMA is disabled in BIOS (or PIO enabled).

You might also try removing absolutely all hardware you can for the installation: second drives, printers, etc. that are not necessary. Stick with the minimum you need to have your keyboard, mouse, screen and target installation drive. Then you can try adding the hardware one piece at a time.

An XP boot/installation disk that will get you DOS with smartdrv is here:

Just a cooincidence then. They don't go often, but they do go. DX9 may be bad, but it can't be that bad ;)
