    Hi,
I hope this is posted in the right section.
I am having trouble installing my printer (epson r220).
When I go via start/printers/add printer I get the message :
"operation could not be completed.the print spooler service is not running "
I have tried installing/uninstalling/re-installing the epson disc but have had no joy there.
    All cables are connected properly

    anybody any ideas ??
    TYIA

Hi halesy1962, Welcome to WindowsBBS :)
I have 3 different models of Epson Printers and all have installed from the CD without any hassle. The latest are Multi Function ink jet printers and the instructions tell you not to connect the USB cable until you are instructed to during the CD visuals on screen.
Did you have any previous printer software installed? If so, it would pay to un-install any old printer software first. If in > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes > you see the MS printer > Delete - by Right click on it.
Let's know how you get on. Neil.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

First check that the Print Spooler Service has been started and, if not, try to start it .....

Click on Start > Right click on My Computer icon > Manage > Click on Services and Applications in the left hand pane of the Computer Management Window > Doubleclick on Services in the right hand pane .....

Scroll down the list to Print Spooler and check it's status ....

If it shows started (unlikely in view of your issue) close down Computer Management.

If the status is blank double click on Print Spooler to open the Properties box and under Service Status click on Start.

If the Service does not start make a careful note of any error messages and post them here.

    Close Computer Management.

If this fails to fix the issue see this MS article .....

You cannot add a printer and you receive printer spooler error messages in Windows XP

    Hi PeteC
Thanks for the post,I did as you suggested and heres what happened.
There was nothing marked in status for print spooler,I then clicked start the service,I then received a message which read :
"could not start the print spooler service on local computer "
"error 2 : the system cannot find the file specified ".

I then clicked the link you posted and followed the steps but when I got to rename the folder oldspool I got this message :
"cannot rename spool : access is denied "
"make sure that the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not curretly in use ".

Is this one of the instructions in the FixIt? It is not mentioned in the rest of the article.

Are you logged on as Administrator? I don't get 'access denied' on my old XP box running XP Pro SP3 as Admin when trying to change the name of the folder.

Another possible cause is that the file is actually in use ....

Is the Epson software still installed - if so uninstall it followed by a reboot.

Is there another printer installed (but not necessarily physically connected) on the system?

    Also meant to ask ....

    Is spoolsv.exe present in C:\Windows|System32?
