The computer works fine at work on the network but cannot access the modem for dial up at home.

The modem is installed properly in Device Manager and can be query the modem in diagnostics.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Wil

We need to know details about the modem. Is it internal or external, they install differently. Can you tell us the make and model?

Are you running the connection wizard and at what point does it stop?

See if you can copy and paste the results of the diagnostics here. If there are many "unknowns" in the diagnostics, even though there is a lot of other information, the modem won't be working properly.

If you haven't done so, look up dial-up in Help and Support.

PS I hope I might be able to help you. I installed probably hundreds of modems under Win 98, a few in XP, but none in Vista.

    Hey Matt,

    Thanks for the reply.

The error occurs when setting up a new dial up account. The modem is a US-Robotics USR2973A.

I seems that something in services.msc isn't communicating with communications or not turned on maybe? I have no problem accessing the modem, but Dial up properties doesn't see it.

Maybe you should sell it at $1972 and then you could buy around a hundred standard dial-up modems :D. Maybe it's an antique (or made of pure gold) :D.

You talk about "at work ", we don't even know if it is a desktop or laptop. If it is a laptop computer, I suppose the modem is built-in. At work, your internet will connect through the network, not by dial-up.

You need to give us more details about the modem and computer, but I could try giving you some of my best guesses.

"...installed in Device Manager..." does not mean the device is working the way the hardware manufacturer intended. Do you know that the correct drivers are installed? If not, try going to the laptop or modem card manufacturer's website to look for the drivers. Modems might work on a set of basic (generic) drivers, but most need specific drivers supplied by the manufacturer. If you find new or specific drivers, read the instructions, you might need to (or should) uninstall the current modem listed in Device Manager.

Next I would look at the COM port the modem is on. COM port 1 and 2 are for external modems, an internal modem uses COM port 3 (or higher). You should see what port it is using in the modem diagnostics or the dial-up properties.

There are other areas , but check you can actually connect. Attach a telephone handset to the telephone cable and make sure you get a good, clear (no static) connection. For example, try dialling the ISP telephone number, can you hear it trying to connect to the server?

    Matt
