I use T-mobile and I have been looking at devices that supposedly allow one to copy/modify/back up information stored on a SIM card.

Has anyone any experience with this?

If so, what advice or information can you give?

If it's a smart phone more than likely the contact info is not on the SIM.

    I'm with Scott here Alex,

There isn't very much stored on the SIM, everything I need is on my MicroSD card or onboard memory (regulary backed up to PC) with nothing apart from supplier contacts (voicemail/services etc) stored on the SIM.

It's not worth investing in a SIM reader unless you do use the SIM's limited storage facilities (ie NAME/NUMBER). If you do still want a reader though then they're all much the same.

What got me interested in this is that recently I got an additional line activated with T-mobile. There are numbers stored on the SIM's quick-call list that I want taken off. T-mobile says they cannot remove them. One of them is directory assistance and the rreason for it's being there is obviously to get more money out of my bank account. I know they are on the SIM because when the SIM is moved to another phone, the numbers appear there. In other words, those number follow the card.

I understand that SMS are also stored on the card. I'm not not sure about that; but, I am leaning toward believing it is so.

Yes, it is a smart phone, a Palm Treo 680.

Regarding the fixed contact numbers on the SIM, as far as I'm aware you cannot remove them (Think of it as read only memory). Regarding SMS's yes it's possible that your SIM can store a limited amount but it's most likely that they are stored on your Treo.

    Is this the little gem?

Isn't it fairly easy to Not dial it?

Your just-don't-dial-it reply indicates you are of the opinion this is a question that maybe should not be asked.

By the time I get all my numbers in my quick-dial list, the three unwanted T-mobile entries cause me to have to scroll the list to get to some of my numbers. Also, I want my voicemail number at the top of the list, not the bottom. So, I named my voicemail number "_Voicemail" and it comes out at the top. Now I have an unnecessary (T-mobile) entry, Voicemail, at the bottom, too.

I have just enough space on that quick-dial list to get all my most important numbers into a single screen -- if I can rid myself of T-mobile's unwanted clutter.

It's my phone and I don't like T-mobile's intrusion into my quick-dial list with their unwanted clutter, hence, the question.

    Alex,
Don't take this the wrong way but why don't you get get a new phone. Tmobile doesn't even offer that phone any more.
Get something with the Android operating system and you will be glad you did.

I have programs on this phone that are made for Palm OS and they work too well to fiddle with another system. One is a program that records any or all calls. (No lectures please; it's legal.) The other is a call-blocking program that currently has over 300 telemarketer's numbers in it. I add to that block list almost every day. They get to call once and then they can never call again from that number. When I look at the call-block log, I see about six a day and sometimes more that I didn't even have to hear them ring.

Another is MobiSystem's Office that handles DOCs, spreadsheets, PDFs and RTFs. I use the RTFs every day in my work.

My contacts list has about 3000 numbers in it and I don't care to convert.

Then there is the cost of replacement programs to consider.

I've come to rely on the features of this phone so much that I have three spares.

Even if I got a free phone and programs that do all the same things just as well, what would be the point of using it instead of the perfectly-working one I already have.

Finally, I'm not leaving T-mobile; it's the cheapest and most reliable when I compare the service with my friends on Verizon and (the unfortunate ones who are plagued with AT&T). The T-mobile SIM card would have the same clutter numbers in it on the new Android.

Even if you could gain read/write access to the sim card, the 411 & More stuff would not necessarily be readable text you could edit. It's likely that it's been coded into a binary file (application) which you can't edit in a text editor.

You're probably correct; but, I won't know for sure until I try. The reader/writer thingy cost only about four bucks with shipping. That and a little time is all the cost of learning.
