The hard drive on my desktop pc running Windows 7 Ultimate is partitioned into 4 drives. Recently the D and F drive names changed to "Local Disk" and I am unable to rename them using the drive properties or by right clicking on the drive and selecting rename. In each case, the correct rename window opens and I can enter the correct name but the changes are not shown when I re-open "My Computer "
Can anyone suggest a permanent way of renaming these partitions.

Open a command prompt. Enter diskmgmt.msc - Run

In the disk management panel you can rename the partitions and change the drive letters.

Just in case you do not know how to open a command prompt, this is how to do it.

Click 'Start' then type cmd in the search box. A box will open above, right click on the cmd logo and select 'Run as Administrator'
You will be asked to verify, click 'Yes'
A new box will open with the command prompt, type the command diskmgmt.msc and hit enter.

I have tried renaming the partitions using disk management as suggested but, as before, the changes do not show in "My Computer ".
Can anyone suggest further possible solutions?

OK, not sure why that method isn't working but time to try with some free software, GParted. Download from the link below and burn the image to a CD. You can then boot the PC with the disc and it will give you full control of your partitions.

    http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php

When the link opens click on "Download Stable Releases (iso/ zip)" under "GParted Live CD/USB/HD/PXE Bootable Image ".

If you do not have image burning software download and use this.
