I need to run a flight sim program as administrator but I can't locate the setup file. I went to my CD Rom drive but it isn't there when i double click. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I know the program works in Windows 7 64-bit.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Please do not tag onto another thread with your own issues, even though you think they are related. Always start a new thread. Your post moved to a new thread.
    When you double click what?

In Windows Explorer go Tools > Folder Options > View and uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types'. All file extensions will now be shown.

(If you don't see the Menu bar click on Organise > Layout and check Menu bar.)

Insert the CD-Rom drive You may see an Autoplay window - click on Open folder to view files.

In the Explorer window identify setup.exe, right click on it > Run as administrator.

If you see no CD content there are 2 possibilities ....

The CD drive is faulty - check to see if it reads another CD, or

The sim CD is faulty - is this an original or a copy?

Will follow your advice. Sorry for the lapse in protocol. I'm new to both computers and this forum.

PETE: Many thanks for your prompt reply. As you suggested, I went to IE "Tools" and found only "Internet options ". I then went into that to look for "folder options" with no success. Naturally, I could proceed no further. Can you advise? Thanks.

PETE: I followed your instructions re folder options but seem to come to a dead end after unchecking "Hide extension for known file types ". When I click the ok tab I am returned to the tools section. When I click "apply" tab nothing happens. Further, I can't locate Organize>layout and check menu bar. I spent an hour looking for it. As far as I know, my compter is in excellent shape -- almost new -- and uninfected by any virus. I have had no trouble installing other flight sim programs up till now. I am a rather old coot (79) and use the puter almost exclsuively for flight sim, news and e mail so I am not current on the language of computers. I can follow directions, however (especially from the wife). Incidentally, to answer an earlier query of yours, the program in question is new and a boxed dvd. Thanks for your patience.

Let's take this step by step ....

Clicking on OK or Apply both have the same end effect - when you look in Windows Explorer you should now see all the file extensions, including the .exe extension - screenshot. Is this the case?

The second screenshot shows the location of Menu Bar under Organise in Windows Explorer. To show the Menu Bar it must be checked as shown.

Normally when you install a program from a CD/DVD an Autoplay window pops up after the CD/DVD has been recognised - screenshot .....

The Autoplay window shown is for Photoshop CS4 (as an example) - one of the options is Run Autoplay.exe clicking on this will initiate the installation of the program. Do you see this after the DVD has been inserted into the drive? Screenshot.

If you do not go into Windows Explorer and click on your DVD drive you should see the contents of the DVD in the right hand pane - is this the case?

If all you see are icons select details from the Options dropdown list in the top right of the Window - screenshots

In the list of files on the DVD you should see a file such as Autoplay.exe or Setup.exe - these are the executables to initiate the installation - double click on the file to initiate the process.

Let us know how you get on :)

Peter: forgive my ignorance, but as I said earlier when I click "ok" and/or "apply" i get nothing. Nothing happens. I'm a little puzzled by your phrase "look in" windows explorer and I'll see all the file extensions -- as in your first screenshot. I don't. This makes makes me think I may be missing a step after clicking on the ok-apply tabs. Am I? Please advise.

Let's establish exactly how your files are shown in Windows Explorer - there are several options for the display.

Open Windows Explorer and click on your C:\ drive to show the contents in the right hand pane.

Which of the displays do you see - referring to the screen shots below? .....

    1, 2, 3, 4, or 5

Great - now I know what you are seeing :)

In Windows Explorer click on down arrow to the right of the icon resembling a list - screenshot 1. This will reveal a list of options - select Details - screenshot 2

Place the DVD in the DVD drive and click on the drive in the left hand pane of Windows Explorer to reveal the list of files and folders on the DVD. They should be in the form shown in here ....

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/attachmen...able-find-flight-sim-setup-file-files-dvd.jpg

In the list of files on the DVD you should see a file such as Autoplay.exe or Setup.exe - these are the executables to initiate the installation - double click on the file to initiate the process.

PETE C: Thanks to your very generous help, I finally installed the flight sim program -- only to be confronted by another problem. Very frustrating. Simply stated, when I go to launch the program from its icon I get an error message that my screen resolution is "insufficient ". I am currently at 1920x1080. I tried varying resolutions on the scale with no results. I tried two other newly installed programs and both worked fine with no such error. I am down with the flu so I'll need a day or two before I can give you further details. Very frustrating. Thanks again for your help.

Great news - I was confident that you would make it :)

As to the new issue, which must be intensly frustrating please start a new thread as the issue is different from the one which has now been resolved.

In the meantime please post the name of the flight sim and I can check the system requirements.
