I have had many problems with my laptop (Acer aspire 57322) over the past few months. It was slow loading and had to be restored to previous times. Last week it would not load at all so took it to the computer shop and paid £200 to have everything backed up, windows reinstalled and AVG put on.
It loaded ok when i got home. I installed office 2007 and downloaded adobe and flash player. I updated word as well.
Today it is taking over 10 mins to load windows again. What have I done and any ideas how to solve it without spending more money. I can't restore as I have no restore points.

    Hi ILM!

Slow startups can occur due to many reasons, but generally it's about keeping the boot-up process to what you actually need and keeping the harddrive defragmented(defragment is usually on by default in Windows 7, if not selected otherwise).

    1) Press Start, in search field, type "Msconfig ". Run it as administrator.
    2) Go to the Startup-tab, and unmark the programs that you DO NOT WISH TO START DURING BOOTUP. For instance, MSN, java reader, flash reader etc. (theese apps will be started when you try to use a java page etc.)

If not , you could try checking the systems log, and see if there any repeating errors occur during the time of the startup. If so, copy/paste the log here and we'll have a log.

I would love to try that but computer won't load at all now. It just went to start up repair and then said repair can not be done and shut down. Exactly as it did before I took it to the shop. Getting really annoyed. Can they Charente me for not fixing it?!

Can you enter Safe-mode? If so, try doing that and resetting it to a previous restore point. Otherwise, what errorcode(s) do you get?

I'm not really sure what I'm looking for but I have got into event viewer and looked at errors. there are quite a few errors but the most common one has occured 276 times in the last 24 hrs.
It says: Log name: system. Source: atapi Event ID: 11
Is this useful? Thanks I do appreciate your help

Try unchecking all of them, hit Apply and reboot. (The ones that are neccessary will be marked by default again, so no harm done).

If that still doesn't help, I would ask you to take a look in the systems log as mentioned above and see if you get any reoccuring errors during the startup-time.

As for "Desktop manager" I don't know what that is I'm afraid. Does it appear in Safe-Mode aswell?

No it didn't appear in safemode. The common error in systems log is atapi. 'The driver detected a controller error on\Device\Ide\IdePort0

Is it reoccuring, every startup? Even after startup?

Seems to be someting wrong with your primary HDD, you might want to check your cables (unplug/plug back in). And do a checkdisk, to see if the disk is faulty.

If it generates alot of error and is an old drive, it might be on its way to a slow and painful death, therefore taking long to bootup.

 those computer shops sure know how to charge, that is a lot of money just to back up and reinstall windows.

Did you buy this second hand, if it was new in March it must still be under guarantee???

From what I have read above they is a possibility your hard drive is failling. Best way to check this is with the manufacturers diagnostics. You need to take the hard drive out and look for the make and model number then search for hard drive diagnostics under the manufacturers name. Download the ISO image file for dos and burn this to CD as an image file and reboot the PC with it in the drive.

    Watch for the results.

If this gives your hard drive the all clear I suspect you may have a virus so a visit to our Malware and Virus forum may be worthwhile.

Thanks it was brand new from Comet in march so yes still within 12 month guarantee. I had assumed it was a software issue so would not be under guarantee. I will be taking it back if it is the hard drive! It's with the computer shop now - not sure where I stand if they don't fix it. SHould I get my money back do you think?

You really should run a checkdisk or the above mentioned manufacturers diagnostic tool, to make sure that it most definately is the drive before you go back to the store. This is to make sure you're not wasting your own time and the stores time, after all, we're not yet sure it is the harddrive :)

Thanks aciid. I'm waiting for the repair shop to get back to me as it's with them at the moment. If they can't fix it I will rin the diagnostics and go from there.

You most certainly should get your money back unless they can show that it was something that you did. Charging 200 pounds for what they did with the previous repair is way over the top IMO.

Is it fixed? I have a Acer Desktop, sounds like the same problem. After complete system restore, still takes FOREVER to get into Win 7 and VERY slow once in. Also, Aero Themes will not work, only basic themes. Still under warranty, only about 6 months old but don't want to have to take it in.
