I fear this may be a microsoft office problem, because saving word or excel files is worst, but saving scans or pdf's etc also slow to display the folder tree in the save as dialog box. Any ideas what will help? 2 PCs running XP SP2, networked with cable, one is much worse than the other.

Support for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows 2000 ended on July 13, 2010. This means that security updates will no longer be offered for these platforms. You should install SP3 immediately.

You might want to try this little tweak:

Thanks Steve, I did that, but it doesn't help. I read somewhere that MS word checks through all mapped drives and this can delay the "save as" function, but I like my mapped drives! I have deleted the non-connected ones, but I love my shortcuts to folders on the other computer. Is there another way of connecting? The other PC is even slower, and doesn't have mapped drives.
Pete - I have avoided upgrading to SP3 after reading that it can cause all kinds of problems to my set up. I have never had the time to do it, and suffer problems. Is it problem free?

Tools->Options->File Location is where Word gets its information.

Approx how many minutes does it take to save a Word doc? And are these docs fairly simple docs?

While it is true that some users have had issues, but millions have not.

SP2 is insecure and unsupported - you would be advised to install SP3 to secure your systems, but that is your decision of course :)

No guarantee with this but may be worth a try.

Open 'My Computer', disconnect the drives which are not available, such as network drives.

Pete - have now installed SP3. not as scary as I thought.
Mark, that does help, but I like having a mapped drive to a laptop folder, quicker than going through my network places etc, each time I am using it. Is there any other way of doing that?
Seems the slower pc is also better with my laptop mapped drive gone. Does that make sense?
Steve, it is only 10 seconds or so, but that seems ages waiting for the drop down folder list to appear. Larger files, with photos eg, do take a lot longer, but even empty docs give a wait before the folder list appears.
    Thanks all
